Mark 1 GTI convertible wanted - where to start

Bwahahaha, its a sad, very true tale but absolutely brilliantly told.

1985 GTI cabriolet black edition (42k miles)
1999 Triumph Daytona 955i Post apocalyptic, rat, brat, scrambler, steam punk, cafe racer

TBigJohn  That is a mastery of a description.

I've never paid more that hundreds for a mk1 so to me 8k for one is insane

I bought my car for a bargain price of £4600….

But that was 24 years ago when the car was only 6 years old….

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

I'll continue to feedback on this one. stalbans1.jpeg stalbans2.jpeg stalbans3.jpeg stalbans4.jpeg

6k can buy a lot of car. For example, you could probably find a 2011 Golf convertible for that price:

Auto Trader UK - New and Used Cars For Sale

Air con, all round electric windows and hood, computer, ABS, power steering, airbags, etc etc. Is the Mk1 Golf convertible really a match for the Mk6 version? I know there's the appeal of the Mk1, but is it 6000 appeals???

But has it got character? I consider my modern daily, a Skoda Karoq, a household essential, white goods, like a fridge. It does a job well, but would I choose it to take for a drive just for the fun of it, like when I started driving over 40yrs ago? No. The Golf is my hobby/fun car, I could take up fishing, watching football, or God forbid, actually play Golf, instead of owning a Golf, but I like cars.
It is also my licence saver due to being an auto, it makes for quiet relaxed driving, even with the top down, whereas my 1360 screamer Mk1 Escort shouts "Spank me big boy", every time I start it up. Also, I'm not sure if this is a bonus though, my wife will drive the Golf, but flatly refuses to drive the Escort as it scares her!

Of course its very subjective. Having owned a number of other VW convertibles in addition to a Mk1 Golf convertible, I'd say the positives from the "character" are outweighed by the negatives (of heavier steering, no remote CL, higher NVH, poorer brakes etc). The auto vs manual is a non-argument, if you want/need an auto you can find either.

A few things I've noticed with the black sport line car.

How old is the new roof? It's not fitting right on the sides, you should not see the plastic trim above the side windows.
if you look at this roof you can see the difference.. Don’t buy this car in the link as it’s a scam at that price has has been doing the rounds for months…
http://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/cars-for-sale/vehicles/1993-mk1-golf-gti-sportline-cabriolet/

Top radiator card missing.

Clutch cable is not sitting right, there should a clip which holds the cable to the rocker cover and a plastic clip which holds it to the brake master cyinder, you can see the cable is on an angle just above the gearbox.

Looks like the wrong fuel filter is fitted, looks like the early smaller type, later cars have a bigger filter. Not a real problem but the later style bigger jubilee clip may be missing. You do need to change the filter every 20,000 or 2 years so it is service item.

Top strut mounts coming to end of there life as the gap is fairly big.

The front grill has been off the car and someone has lost the 2 little plastic covers which covers the screw near the headlights.

All simple fixes but may help with the price…

I know the car as I did the roof.
It had a complete replacement frame, headliner, interliner, padding, rear window frame.
New mohair hood.

That was in early December 2017.
Insofar as the hood sitting like that at the side frame hinge point it didn’t leave the workshop like. I can assure you.
It may of been undone later to sort out issues and not put back properly.

I’d be happy for you to bring the car to me if you buy it and I’ll take a look at it.

Insofar as the line fits you can often see the plastics as they run along the sides. Perfectly within parameters.
The hood may raise up slightly centrally as you will see the frame and new padding is at its thickest point there.
The side cables that pull the hood down at the sides are on springs so allow give.
The other pic in your link the roof is way too low on those sides.
There’s a multitude of reason why.

The fuel filter is the correct one for the car. Earlier ones tended to have the bigger filter.
I have the same smaller filter in my 1991 Rivage.

enjoyed meeting Tony and his Sportline. £6k asking price.
Overall impressions were straight, mostly orginal, sounded good, drove well, lighter steering than the last one i test drove, and rust free.(less a bad patch near boot latch (lower near radiator see pic)
New brakes, new roof, (less the issue of not sitting as it should)

Pics attached.

Negative comments I picked up:
Keys - no key to lock boot!? (new lock set?)
Cable for back seat drop not working
No floor mats
Boot light not working
Steering colum lose (screws missing easy fix)
Trim clips missing
Paint work - generally good. Needs a respry for show level of course, but for, detailing and a good mop would siffice
No alarm or immobiliser
Fans nor spotlights working
not been driven for months and is SORN - needs a good service and engine tune (video)

Brakes - GREAT, good over bumps, no noisy fuel pump, steering and clutch good, gear box good, electric roof worked great

Negative comments I picked up:

Keys - no key to lock boot!? (new lock set?) - odd, both doors, boot and ignition should be one key, poss had replacement boot lid?

Cable for back seat drop not working, - the one in boot or the strap on the seats? Either way not a big deal or hard to sort

No floor mats - they wouldn't fit if it did have any

Boot light not working - festoon bulb

Steering colum lose (screws missing easy fix) - why would the screw be missing? They dont just fall out unless the threads are stripped out of the plastic

Trim clips missing - you'll find more

Paint work - generally good. Needs a respry for show level of course, but for, detailing and a good mop would siffice - you'll be surprised how good the original paint can come up with time and decent products

No alarm or immobiliser - good, you dont want one

Fans nor spotlights working - My fan didnt work either but there isnt much to them so its an easy cheap fix even if it needs replacing

not been driven for months and is SORN - needs a good service and engine tune (video) - so room for movement on price then!

Personally this sounds pretty good to me, a sportline for 5k in useable condition, I'd get it before someone else does

thanks for comments
reassuring.

can you tell me why I wouldnt want an alarm/immobilzer?

When was the last time you paid any attention to a car alarm?

They generally aren't particularly good if they are aftermarket anyway and there are far better alternatives on the immobiliser front which are less likely to go wrong and screw you like an immobiliser would.

I have opted for an aftermarket removable steering wheel and I dont even bother locking the doors as I'd rather they just opened them and saw the deterant rather than damaging the car then working it out
