Any potential buyer would surely expect
recovered seats in original material for that price.

For that much I would want an un restored original car as that would make it rare as most tin tops cars have had some repair due to rust.

never welded and original paintwork Mk1 Gti tin tops
are left out there, if there are any I assume they would command
a very high price.

Not many I'd say but impossible to put a number on it.
Sellers interpret "original paintwork" in many different ways!

I don't get why some slate the prices people are asking for the cars. They guy was bothered to go to an auction, buy the car at his risk, get the tyre kickers round etc etc. If someone wants to give him 14K for it then fair play to him. Nothing ventured nothing gained I say. If it doesn't sell then he can drop the price by 25% and still be making something while at the same time your car is better and cheaper so more likely to sell!
Personally, I have no problem whatsoever with a seller making a honest profit. you speculate to accumalate etc, but if a seller is asking a top end price the car needs to be correct, unless you are hoping to hook the uninformed.
As I mensioned in my original post the seats need to be retrimed and minor details correct for that price.

There just seems to be a bit of sour negativity on here regards the price. Without seeing the car in the flesh its impossible to say what its worth is. Seats are an easy fix. I'd be more interested to know what the body is like. Looks to have a webasto roof which is the real shame for me. With 85K on it if its genuine then it could be a good car despite the faults.

It's double the price it should be.

For me, there is no getting around that massive hole in the roof.

Someone told me I was mad spending £3.5K on a 40,000 mile gti in 2008…….

Yes a nice potential profit seeing how much it went for at auction.
I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure it's the same GTI that didn't sell in the November auction and carried over to the next.
When I was there in November the bonnet was up and the inner wings by the scuttle jumped out at me like a sore thumb - full of filler!!!
I didn't look at the rest of the car after seeing that
