I too am amazed at the Prices some folks post for rare finds on Ebay…. What really amazes me is that some folks will buy it for that much…

As my brother said many years ago at a car show, he placed a 89,000 dollar price on one of his vettes a 89 Brookwood Vette, all original matching numbers..
I said are you kidding?  He said it is negotiable, but some one frothingly stupid will buy it for that price.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Quick here's another one.
One wiper arm, none GTI type for £30 plus post.

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/e11021.m43.l3160/7?euid=4fc96f6e9119407fa6fb534eca501fa2&bu=43391654394&loc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.at%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F152881972703&sojTags=bu=bu

If it was £15 or even maybe and say maybe as I would need to be desperate then £20.

As an example about 18 months ago I bought a pair of the GTI type with the drivers arm wind deflector from Germany.
They came with a pair of brand new Bosch blades in the box.

I had the arms professionally sandblasted, powder coated in the original semi-matt black.

Now they are as good as new, you really couldn't tell the difference.
They now owe me with the post from Germany and the work £50.

If wondering why I bought them it was because mine does have the GTI ones fitted from the factory! 😉

I do, as I will strip one of mine down to bare parts and sell it off a piece at a time…  30 bucks for a relay  200 for a sunvisor… 1000 for a full set of seals for the top, the boot cover should go for 500….  used ball joint 35 dollars, I think some of the Digiparts are priceless…..  A new air tube is 350, so mine should go for 500…. A working Electric window controller 450….. Heater blower switch with knob 50…….  I shoudl get 3900 for it in parts at least and the ultra rare working fuel sender 1500, Tank included.  lololololololololol…

Hey Brian I don't know what it's like in the States but over here (Europe) I've seen dozens of MK1's complete but needing a fair amount of time not money so much being bought up to break them into spares.

With the Internet, time and space you can make a small fortune on spare parts and people do exactly that.
I know of a number of guys that found it so profitable they've given up their day jobs to build on their own businesses! ;)

It's something that I really wanted to do about six years ago but with a 14 old son at school etc… I didn't have the balls if I'm honest.

Still kicking myself especially now where due to my health I'm being forced into early retirement! :(

Oh well, worst things happen at sea don't they! :)

The more that get broken the rarer the bits get and hence the price goes up.
At least this seems to be the thought process.

We've been on about scene tax for years, but that used to be only for 'rare' or after market bits in perfect condition.

Now it seems to be anything!

Worlds gone bonkers.

I'll stick to my non scene tax prices.

Ahem….
If you'll all excuse me for a minute while we all conveniently forget that I'm a raging capitalist and professional bastid….
I got into VWs through my mates back in the '90's.  We were all mostly skateboarders and surfers down on the coast with little money but shared interests.
Back then, apart from a few exceptions, we helped each other out and hunting down rare parts was part of the fun.  Parts weren't normally stupidly priced and bartering was a pretty big thing.
Okay, so fast forward and we find ourselves in the situation we're in - idiots trying to extort cash from people.
I get it, people want to make money.  That's fine.  Knock yourselves out.  But trying to turn people's passion into your golden ticket is just a shetty move.
And I've done it, I've broken a load of cars for various reasons and made some good holiday/project money pout of it.  But I'd like to think the stuff was priced more than fairly and everyone was happy.
And what baffles me is that people actually buy this stuff.
Why on earth would you risk using bobbins old seals when you can get new from a company like Classic Vw for a lower price?  Because it's not OEM?  Who cares?  I'd rather have something that works properly and has the benefit of hindsight and new production methods than bragging rights because it's original kit whilst conveniently overlooking the fact that it's old and busted.
We genuinely had someone on the other forum who was happy because his tyres were original.
Honestly.
20 year old tyres.
I absolutely despair sometimes.

Have an excellent day everyone, did I ever tell you how this all used to be fields?

What a bargain !!

I just love eBay at the moment. Someone if flooding it with uses parts all of it way over priced but everything from a screw to rocket cover either starts or ends with RARE. Really. There is also a G60 engine listed for 1000. Now to be fair you don’t see them all the time but a grand feels a little steep to me.

I know exactly what you mean, I work for a company that restores old Porsche’s and the amount of times I’ve tried to explain to some old dude in bright trousers that just because that bit of metal that’s so rusty and thin that you can see daylight through it is original it really shouldn’t be there anymore.
As for parts they’re the worlds worst for buying low selling high, £1000 for a tail light £6000 for a deck lid and so on but you tell them it’s going to take 500-600 hrs to rebuild the brown mangled mess of metal they’ve presented you with then all of a sudden they come over all thrifty and need to save every square inch of “ original “ rust that they can.
And then more often than not are they’ve spent months telling you about there passion and how “they intended to use the car” and “it’s not just going to be another show pony “ they take it to a couple of shows, everyone tells them what a great job THEY’VE DONE !! and then they sell it for a vast profit based on the fact that it’s had a full resto !
That’s better! Sorry got a bit ranty myself there lol
