My dad bought this in 1982 and is only the second owner.  He bought it after his mk1 escort got written off after a woman pulled out in front of him on a main road, luckily he survived but the car didn't.   Any way he ran it untill 1993 when it need some work, he had the engine fully rebuilt and some body work done.  Unfortunately in 1998 due to lack of money as it needed more welding ( typical ford) it came of the road and sat in a garage untill about two weeks ago.  I have always loved this car and it is what got me into cars in the first place.  After a lot of begging he agreed for me to trailer it to my place to see what I could do.  Any way I managed to get the engine running for the first time since 1998 and run well.  Now I'm starting to strip it ready for alot of welding.

Ohhh a brave man if ever there was one, getting into an old Escort resto " may the Ford be with you " I had a coupe when I was 16 but when my mum saw it on the drive she made me get rid of it as I didn't even have a provisional license at the time and had a tendency to ride my motocross bike places I shouldn't lol. Anyway good luck, what's the plan ? Standard spec or are you going to tweak a few bits ?

Mk2 escort running - YouTube

Plans are to get it to standard spec. Can't afford concourse but should be close tho. Don't see many about that have not been modded the plan is to have it welded up and all the mechanical checked and Motd by June then get it painted by August. That's the plan but money is tight so doing as much as I can when u can. It's not a case of handing it over with a blank cheque and saying get on with it. There is a budget, tho I recon I will blow it

Traded a mk2 1600 sport for my first mk1 gti, back in 1989, was allowed £500 for it against £3200 ish for the golf,  suspect may now be worth more than the golf. (if its survived,)

Yeah I know that feeling, budget the nemesis of every car enthusiast, well most of us in the real world

Good luck with the resto, I'm looking forward to the updates. It will be nice to see a standard escort as so many are modded and you also have  nice complete standard car to build from.
Keep the updates coming

Had a friend started to restore one of these back in the day but then found out he could not get classic insurance for it (probably different now) . He welded solid for 6 months and I had never seen a car with rust on the roof to that extent! Nice that this one is your dads as it is always worth doing when there is a personal connection. I fixed my dad's old Tilly lamp for more than I could buy a second hand one!

Tilly lamp, tilly lamp! 😂
I did all the body work repairs, primed and painted my mk1 Escort (two tone Daytona yellow and black) under 1 fluorescent light and six 'Tilly lamps'.

1980 was that, what great memories I have now from that time, but ask me then in winter when I can't feel most of my body I'd have given you a completely different answer!

So cold I'd lost the powers of speech. 😉 👍🏼

Bit of an update things been a bit slow as my son was born first week of January so been busy with him. However I have managed to strip most the interior out ready for welding. To be honest it not as bad as I thought. Need new front floor pans, patch in boot, new wheel tubs and a patch repair between tub and rear bench support

When I put my Mk1 back on the road 4yrs ago one of the things I found was repro floor panels work out more time/cost effective that welding small pieces in all over. Another thing I discovered all parts are available but front wings and NOS parts are eye wateringly expensive. I fitted repro indicator units off Ebay for £60 a pair, when a set of NOS sold for £720!!!!
(but like you it had to be done as the car had been in the family over 30yrs)

Bloody hell lol. I have looked at whole floor pan but it’s £625 plus welding but the parts for floor I need are £250 plus welding I’m fairly luck as I’m starting with a complete car apart from the rusty bits most things are in good condition. The seats are mint as had covers on since 1982

This time, the car has been rebuilt before….. I got away with both front footwells, front radiator x member, front panel, both rear inner and outer arches, a section of the rear light panel, both door bottoms and a bit on the tops,  boot side wells, most of the front toeboard and a small bit in the wings.
Weirdly it's still on its original sills. If you sit near a Mk1 or Mk2 Escort on a quiet, still night, you can hear the damn things rust.  :ocf_emoticons__icon_lol:

Lol mine had engine rebuilt in 1993 and had sills replaced as well but still for the last 20 years in a barn has caused it to decay but like the mk1 golfs they are worth keeping hold of.

I’m also finding it very difficult to undo bolts as most have seized up.  Trying removing the fuel tank earlier managed to remove bottom fuel line with out breaking any thing then removed the breather and the tank holding bolts. Then realised I need to undo 3 screws behind the filler cap which I don’t have the key for so my poor dad has to search his house for a key he hasn’t used in 20 years
