Chalk and cheese, chalk and cheese.

I have my beloved Mk1 Cabrio and my Mk6 TSI, DSG, 7 speed Tiptronic fully loaded with factory extras and guess which one gives me and others the most pleasure?

It's your call, we'd be sorry to lose you as a member but you've got to do what's best for you. 👍🏼

Thank you. I need to sell my Porsche 968 first anyway (pictured), and I know that I'd get so much pleasure from just looking at the right Mk1 that I can't discount one.
Keep your eyes out for me please all.

Begin old enough to actually have run both Mk1 and Mk2 as daily drivers….

I'd probably go for a Mk2, its easier to find a reasonably priced clean original one that's still got lots of life left in it, whereas really nice MK1s are becoming expensive holiday and weekend cars, too nice to use in the daily grind esp over winter.

Both are DIY-able with good parts supply but the MK2 can be seen as the definitive Golf with the MK1 as the prototype……

It's a bit bigger without being modern super mini massive, bit safer, better suspension (front subframe), better brakes inc rear disks on GTI, better ride and refinement but not like a numb modern mobile arm chair car, availability of PAS, GTI available with 5drs. Many have just enough toys, lecky windows and central locking without being stuffed full of ECUs and electronics that go wrong with old age.

A late MK2 GTI 5dr with PAS is probably about as good as it gets for as a car for all seasons and reasons.

Have you considered a cabriolet? Lovely in the summer or dry days but you need a wind deflector to enjoy them the most….

I run a Mk1 Gti cabriolet as my daily and have done for over 20 years, mine lives outside as my Mk1 scirocco is in the garage. The cabriolet are better built and better rust proofing than the tin tops as they are made at the Karmann factory, if you go for the later model with the body kit they have plastic along the sills and around the wheel arches which protects them but they can hide rust, a good feel inside the arches is a good way to check.

I've also had a couple of Mk2 Gti as well along the way and they are a more comfortable car to drive, it seams early cars are better at holding the rust at bay but if neglected they do rust just as bad as a Mk1. Mk2s are going up in value as you could pick up solid examples for less than £1000, the last one I bought was a 1988 small bumper, 5 door, 135,000 miles, power steering, electric windows (all 4), central locking, digifant engine. There was a couple of scratches on the body and a small dent in the front wing, I paid £650 for it 7 years ago and ran it for 6 months but had to sell it as getting married and needed some cash, oh how I wish I still had it but 3 cars is just to expensive for me to run.

For the same money as a Mk1 tin top you can get a solid low mileage cabriolet but go for the fuel injected cars with the 1.8 as they have lower down torque compared to the 1.6 so you don't have to rev it to death to get the most out the engine, they also more economic on the petrol compared to the 1.8 carb cars I easily get 40 mpg on my 50 miles commute to work.
280,000 miles in mine so far and it's never left me on the side of the road or been on a tow truck.

Serious words of wisdom once again from Mark above. 😉

Have you ever considered the 'Sportline' model Cabriolet? 🤔
If not I recommend you do your homework on this model before taking a leap of faith.
A nice one is within your price range and they are now getting hard to find so the prices are reflecting this. 👍🏼
