Tuning issues, red hot manifold, co reading ignition timing moving etc please help

As a general point of interest.

The Mk1's in the U.K. are not using Digifant I or II. They do turn up from time to time and if they do then they're most likely the Digifant II.
The Digifant I was adapted from the II in order to meet certain regulations in the State of California and nowhere else to my knowledge.

Maybe someone knows different but I lived in Austria for the past 23 years and have only come across or heard of three Mk1's with the Digifant I injection system and they were all imported from California!

Mines a 1990 and has the Digifant II so that's why I use the Bentley workshop manual from the US because Haynes manuals don't cover it.

But again I Stand here waiting to be corrected on this one!  :)

I think it's a fuelling/timing issue…. I've checked the hoses and haven't found any splits or anything, I've got a timing light too and I've set it to six degrees, however it moves when I richen or lean out the fuel, gunna aim for like 1.3% co if I can as that's between the settings it should be? And 900 rpm with ignition timing at 6* btdc Its hard as owt getting those all to coaless

how did you set the timing? you should first disconnect and plug the vacuum line to the distributor, then set it to 6 deg while idling between 900-1000 rpm.

also check the part number on the distributor to make sure its actually a GTI one, and not a carb one. plsu if its not bosch, bin it and get a proper bosch one asap.
