Looks a nice example, but think there needs something sorting with what the definition of original is when talking about condition.

Getting very common now for a restored car to be talked about as original.

This has been painted certainly

A nice buy for someone though if the work has been done well, apart from the angle of the exhaust, worrying that rust patch on slam panel by the grille hasn't been fixed.

Seeing as we haven't got the Guess the Asking price competition this year, anyone want to guess at the final hammer price based on the limited info we have here?

I am going for £6500.

Agree that totally original 'survivor" cars are worth more but they are very few and far between, and those can be virtually unusable as adding mileage and wear and tear devalues them!

This one def been repainted, the front panel supports behind the grille are still red and not been painted matt black, but its been kept to the original spec.

It's not an early 1.6 S1 or a later more desirable (?) 1.8 with all that extra torque.

I guessitmate £5,250 of Mark Carneys almost zero interest rate and billions of £ quantative easing will find a home in this.

Last year a car sold on our club stand at the NEC for £16,0000 - that's was an early S2, 79k miles and never been completely resprayed - just some panels. Think it was a 3 owner. He was offered £20k about 2 hours later… Crazy!

Not knowing much about the cars owners / what work has actually been redone I'd still take a punt on about 9k upwards

yea, looking at some of the Peugeot 205s that have sold recently I might have to double my £5,250 estimate!

If it does clear £10K I might seriously start thinking about selling mine.

That was my car…..
It was a late series2 (a reg) with 49k and totally original.
I could have sold it at least 5 times over!!

Well not great info and to few pictures for starters.

But take a closer look at the storage compartment under the glove box.

IMG_0217.PNG

Looks very grubby to me and not been cleaned properly as far as I'm concerned.
What did the rest of the car look like before they cleaned it too death, well almost!

So that said, wrong time of the year to sell but I'm seeing it at 8ish but could easily go way higher maybe over 10k or very close to it!  :o

We know our Mk1's so know what to look for. You only need 2 people to want it who aren't so clued up but have seen the prices some fetch to send it to the stratosphere.

Personally I see the early series 2 1600 as the least desirable of all the GTI's and the mileage is too high to make it really desirable.

Unless you see the paintwork close up its difficult to put a value on it but I'll go for 7K!

There's 2 more in auction today at Anglian Car auction with estimates……

Yes these two wil be a good marker.  The red one seems a little low on the estimate but could be the undesirability of the Webasto roof, makes you wonder with the overal tidy condition of the black one why not spend a bit of time and cash getting the engine bay up to scratch?  Logged on, but the prices haven't been updated yet. On a seperate note the Corrado G60 looks nice if it comes in near the estimated price.

Hairyarse . Andy, did you go to this today, not a million miles from you?

Haha….no offence taken!!
I must be too honest for my own good!! I shook hands with the buyer at £15k so in my eyes that was it. Sold.
I was more than happy with the price; quite a bit more than the car 'owed' me. Even though cars like that don't come up every day i thought the price was fair. I reckon it would have been worth nearer £20k if it had been this year not last…i think prices have risen over the last 12months.
And quite good memory Si, its Gareth ;-)

You probably are mate, but like you said you're happy with the price you got for it, it's all that matters! You hear from the guy? Hope he's taking good care of it!

Tricky one to value, personally i dont like it when a golf has sills fitted which delete the bottom trims,   And painted red trim on the grill? All smells cheap resto to me.  £5500 is my guess.

The Red Gti your discussing made £5460 at ACA auction. The (with a high estimated) black Gti , and the Corrado remain unsold- I imagine because they did not reach their reserves.
Thought you might be interested.

Red one wasn't bad then considering the roof, not surprised at the black one not getting reserve but the Corrado very surprised - still I dont suppose you can rely on pictures, I nearly bought a Porsche 924S earlier in year looking at the auction pictures, but in the metal (or what metal there was left, it was a complete dog)

Well looks like anything half decent is making @£10K; (made £9,016 this week, not sure if that includes buyers premium?)

The red one at Historics just a few months ago 'only' made £7,280……

Yes that includes the premium, I was at the auction. Not a too bad car really had a lot of work done on it but looked like skimped in a few areas. paint was either micro blistering or a bit dry in a few places and the sill edges were crushed and just painted over. You could see a few places where rust could be about to come through. Sunroof didn't close flush. Left hand rear wheel arch didn't fit well, could indicate filler underneath or just badly put in place.

Good interior complete with Campaign wheel.  Had stripes and badges/decals all in right places. Very clean underneath, axel painted blue for some reason.Wheels were perfect. Braided  fuel lines.

Was listed as having an 1800 engine upgrade, not sure if they were referring to it being a 1600 previously or the original 1800 had been upgraded. latter is possible as block was painted blue like Tim Styles Racing did, or could just be stick and painted blue like other bits on car.

Getting lots of attention at the auction, quite a bit of bidding.
You could buy a wreck and spend lots more than this went for just to get to same condition.
