Today got the box degreased, then brass wire wheel on the drill, alloy wheel cleaner to remove the final oxide and panel wipe.

Gave it 2 coats of acid etch primer :)

You're a brave man, diving that deeply into a gear box. Nice work.

looks like it's all coming along nicely.

Have you got a link to the alternator and pulley you used by any chance?

Hi Ian,

The alternator is a big gamble. I've spoken to rubjonny about it and we recon that a signal can be taken for the revs with another toy i have to convert from 4pot to 6 pot cycle.

The pulley goes with the earlier 24v bracket that the alternator sits in. Again this was a hunch as I've seen other 24v mk1 owners use this rather than the later bracket which puts the alternator lower down the engine which i believe can cause issues with the front panel.

I'm planning to trial fit this Friday and will let you know how i get on. If the engine fits i will give you the numbers as don't want to lead you down the wrong path. Unfortunately I'm making it up as i go along ha ha. Looks alright though

Cheers Matt, nothing original I'm afraid. Boring high temperature aluminium colour.

Finished off the timing chain today and got the valve cover on. I've been waiting for a single stretch bolt from VW which really needed replacing.

Cheers Andy :) it's wrinkle black with silver vein. It's a shame most of it will be covered.

Well no one commented on my last post, maybe the hairy leg put people off lol

Any ways got some paint on the old block today. I put some POR15 metal ready on to etch the surface then brushed on high temperature enamel.
