Dry Ice engine clean.

Post

Has anyone had it done?

As above, there's a company over here that can Dry Ice clean my engine.
My engine and engine bay has never been cleaned since the day it was built 25 years ago.

Believe it or not but my car is Alpine White.
They say it will cost £100 all in but here's my concerns.

I've heard of it but know very little about the process.
So is it really worth it and are there any dangers or risks in having someone do it?

I'd like to have a gleaming, bright and shinny engine that I can keep up to that standard.
But doing it by hand for me is a none starter where I live and without the right equipment!

So can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

Many thanks.

Never seen this before, but just seen the Paul Dalton video on You Tube and it looks amazing.  If someone like Paul uses this technique - he of the £5000 car wash fame then surely must be good!

I got my gearbox when doing my engine - dry iced cleaned it couple of months back… didn't see the process but results were pretty good. I watched the videos too…

It went from this:

to this:

Still sanded it down and painted it…  :)

Cheers Hugh.

Yes it looks amazing Hugh now I've seen some videos.

Even saw one where the dash and interior was being done, might be something worth doing on a Mk1 with all those nooks and crannies!

I was there on Monday to ask the actual price but the guy told me it was a third party company that can do it.

So I'm waiting to hear, also I've told them that it all has to be done the week starting the 27th of April.
The car is in the paint shop next week all week.

The week after that on the Thursday I'm heading down to Woerthersee so obviously I'd like it all done before then.

Five days and nights all on my own with my Cabby.
Leaving two days before the GTI Treffer starts.

Right then bit of an update but slightly off topic.

Dropped my car of at the Classic Car paint shop yesterday morning to have the parking damage done that some complete and utter Burke did.

Photo and Video Storage | Photobucket

I thought while the car is there I'd have some other paint work done, I mean they've got the paint mixed up.

I have the classic rust spot in the middle of the screen at the bottom.
Not that bad yet but needs doing properly all the same.
So they are doing that (screen out and new seal).
And I have about a 2 inch spot at the bottom of the drivers door that needs a Pro.

Remember that was yesterday morning.
Got a call from them at 4:55pm today to say I can pick the car up at lunchtime tomorrow.  :o

Don't know if to smile or cry!  O_o
They have plenty of work to do it's not like they're standing around looking for some, so tomorrow night I'll find out just how good they are!

Back on topic.
The detailing company will have to see my engine before they can give me a fixed price and providing there's enough time. Next week is a short ones as Friday is a national holiday.

If I'm lucky for once and get it all done, I'll have three days to get the car ready for Wörthersee 2015!

Then I will sell the poor unlucky son of a gun!

Blimey that's quick Mike!! On the up side maybe it means they pulled the dent properly as didn't have time to chuck a load of filler in it, shape it etc!!

You'll soon know how good a job they've done if you take the trim car off the inside rear quarter ;)

Hopefully it's a good job done well and you'll be all smiles

Well I used to steam clean my own and was fairly experienced at it but I've never seen anything like this before!
Take a look at YouTube, it's effortless and does no harm.

I watched one where they did the engine and in the next breath did the whole interior with no apparent adjustments to the machine!

Well it's about the same size from what I've seen but the price is much bigger.

Someone told me over here that a good one would set you back about 10-12k GBP!  :o

But that's a sound investment if your interested in the business.

Just a little update on this post.
There wasn't enough time last week for the company that was going to do it for me, anyhow.

I'm off to Wörthersee this Thursday and will come back the following Tuesday.

The day after I have the car booked in at a different company in Vienna.
The company is called 'Park &Wash'.
These people have rented four parking spaces in an underground car park.
The working area is shielded in glass, you just park your car and they will do the rest!

They will do all types of detailing including dry ice cleaning.
You pay for their work plus the hours your car has been in the garage as you would if you went shopping on a Saturday.

I drop my car off at 10:00am and collect it at 1:00pm.
I'm in the world renowned 1st District of Vienna with all its lavish building, coffee house's, restaurants etc….
So there's no shortage of places to go and things to see while I'm waiting!

I'm kind of excited about this and will post up comparisons with before and after.

So the company who did the clean are in the center of Vienna.
The underground carpark is full of top of the range cars, looks like the 1st level doesn't have much under a 100k, it's that kind of place!  :o

The company is called 'Park and Clean' meaning you pay for the parking and they do the detailing whilst you're in your office making millions or spending it.
Think of Sloane avenue and chelsea in London, then you get the idea.
They have three dedicated cleaning bays and five more for detailing, I wonder what that lot costs to rent!  O_o

Yes my number plate mount was loose but when I took this photo a member of staff came over and said it was forbidden to take photos of cars with number plates on.
You should have seen his face when I told him that this is my car, it was a picture I can tell you!  :ocf_emoticons__lmao:   :ocf_emoticons__lmao:  :ocf_emoticons__lmao:

So I arrived with my 25 year old Golf at 10:00am feeling slightly out of place to be honest and they were very nice and said come back in three hours.
This is what they started with but be aware these photos are of such poor quality that they really don't show how bad the engine and bay was and the real results.

Before.

I went back at 1:00pm and they were very apologetic but said it would take another 15 minutes.
They had never cleaned any engine that old, remember it had never been cleaned since the day it left the factory.

I waited another 20 minutes and they asked me to come over and take a look and this is what I'd found.

Basically they had run out of Dry Ice because they'd never expected anything like that!
The technician just kept apologizing as did the Manager but they was me thinking Wow that's mind blowing because I know just how shitty it was and almost impossible to do without machines.

Now what did they charge me bearing in mind where I was?
67.00 Euros or about 50.00 Pounds for what amounted to 3 and a 1/2 hours work.

They asked if I could go back at some point (now they know what they are dealing with) so they could have another go and be sure to have enough Dry Ice as they only get it to order.

They then asked if they could take a few photos of the Mk1 as this was the first one they'd had in 25 years of being in business.
To top it all the parking was going to cost me another 16 Euros but they stamped my parking card and I got it for free.
Does it come any better then that, oh and I will go back!

Now what if any damage does the Dry Ice process do if any?  :o
None whatsoever!

I've seen video's where they do they underside, engine and in the same breath the full interior, including the dash and all its switches etc…
No damage and certainly do mess whatsoever, I looked under my car less than a minute after the guy finished and nothing.

Hairyarse Andy pricey they maybe but these device is a must have!
