But then you'll get one with an aftermarket exhaust or an air freshener hanging off the rear view mirror and then the arguements will start!
You best make some rules at the start of the thread

I personally think the forum is defiantly needing a standard section for the mk1, maybe peops like me would use it more often.

So no VW Dealer fitted extras either I take it then?
Like wheels, stereos, electric aerials and even mud flaps and sunroofs etc!

Because I know for a fact that in the last year to year and half of production.
Many VW Dealers when they got their stock in they would load the GTi's with just about every dealer option.
There'd put it in the showroom, buyers would come in and want to buy one but without some or all of the extras.

They'd be told that they can buy the one in front of them or wait 4 to 6 months for delivery.
You'll be surprised how often they'd take the one in front or the demonstrator they just drove (guaranteed to be fully loaded).
We'd do the same to any GTi we might take in as a P/X, load it up before putting on display. When I left the Dealer in 1987 they were still doing that to used GTi's.

I should know I was selling them!
It is or was called "Overs" in the trade. Like a secret competition to see who could get the highest price 'over' the new list price.  :ninja:
And a heck of a lot of fun it was as well, made a packet!

Should have seen what we did to Audi Quattro Turbo's (could add more than three grand to the list price).

This could turn into a minefield!

How about those cars that are completely original then?  I would vote for original paint and trim that it left the factory with being more important than a few add on extras, with the right amount of time money anyone can create an original 'looking' car, but in my opinion you can't beat the patina of a car with all the paint as it left the factory.

I love the variety of the cars on here the workmanship that goes into creating some of the modified cars that we see amazes me at times and how many cars would have been destined for the scrapyard if it wasn't for the dedication for everyone out there?

The important thing for me in whatever condition they are, it's still another MK1 that's surviving whether it's a basket case being restored or a collectors museum piece and we should all applaud ourselves for that.

As a dealer you weren't fitting coil overs and stretch tyres! - or were you? :lol:I think the aim of the proposed thread isn't  bothered about about dealer fits but where does it draw a line?

I guess an obvious example is an aftermarket sunroof,,,,

Although non original some dealers fitted them but you couldn't kick it out of the "original club" if the rest of the car was standard.

What if you've had to have for example (like me) the front and rear bumpers painted by VW because in the two years I've owned the Cabby two idiots have damaged the original paint?  :P
Until then the paint was as it came out of the factory.

What about my BBS Sportline wheels I added?
The Blaupunkt Bremen Stereo and Graphic Equalizer I searched the world for and paid a small fortune for it?
Then there's the lifetime of a Cabby roof, most have been replaced more than once and often fitted with a mohair because the are considered by many to be better?
Can you still buy the original roof? I think it was 'Wabasto' from memory.
Plugs, leads, dissy cap, light bulbs (that were factory fitted), the list is endless.

This is like walking backwards through a mine field whilst wearing ultramagnetic boots with this twist in the post!  :o
But Hey Ho, it's a free world.

     No we didn't have them then but if we'd had, you can bet we would of fitted them and charged a fortune for them as well!

From memory in my time, we ordered about one third of GTi's with sunroofs and from the ones delivered without, about one in four got the Dealer fitted one.
Apart from the aftermarket sunroofs that we sold, everything else came direct from VW on a truck with the normal parts delivery.

Stereo's

I work with a national transport museum and debates of what constitutes 'original' within has been going on for decades.

It can get very involved finding & setting definitions that have an across the spectrum agreement - for example routine service items? Perhaps understandably silly level for some, but ………

I guess what everyone is saying is if you showed VW your car would they approve of the "modifications" like an original colour as my car was restored and i would rather a restored car than a rusty original, I guess the forum rules will be in the photo you take everything in shot is original as VW intended, so if you have a non-original sunroof make sure that is out of shot so more people will be able to post more pics and have a more interesting collection of photos!!

This thread has completely lost the plot!
who gives a toss if its standard or original as long as it looks standard thats fine for a photo thread

Factory options, what are you going on about! who cares if extras where added by the dealer before it left the factory its still standard

Baz,
I just gave you a   in your previous post!  :)

But in those day's just about the only factory option apart from colour was the Sunroof for a GTi. That was it!
Everything else was a Dealer fit.

But purist care (unlike me).

"That's what I'm going on about."

If people want a dedicated post to a car that may or maybe not as it was when it rolled out of the Factory, so be it.
I won't lose sleep over it and definitely no hard feeling Baz!

I will follow this with some interest but from the sidelines.  ;)

I feel like Daniel walking into the lions den commenting on this but first off all lovely car at beginning off this thread :-)

Also if a thread was to be started for original Mk 1 pictures why not say " standard from dealer" this would cover all base's then restored or not ?

Cheers
Neil

Think alot of people forget that if it wasnt for changing engines fitting better suspention and what have you then the original Gti would have never come about in the first place. Dont get me wrong i love original cars but imagine going to shows where every car is pretty much exactly the same.
