Very jealous my good friend in Majorca had one of these and still have fond memories of belting down the motorway . That was 19 years ago says a lot for these cars. Look forward to seeing it finished.  Martin.

Thanks!

This dropped through the letterbox yesterday……..

Its the roller bearing  only fitted in the Rallye Transfer box.
Normal syncros or the Golf country came with a plain bush. Its quite unique because it doesn't have an inner race but runs direct on the pinion gear to save room I guess.

I got the vw number for it but VW and Heritage said it was obsolete as well as many posts on various Rallye forums.

I managed to get the original part number and manufacturer off the original bearing and gave the numbers to the guys that supply me bearings for machinery I work on. They managed to source one in the bearing manufacturers themselves in Turkey who apparently only had this one left in stock.

Need to get the new pinion gear set now as where this bearing runs, it has badly worn it.

You could buy a complete transfer box from VW up until about 2005 according to some sources on the internet. Asking price………..£3,000!

I've never seen a bearing without the inner race before. Makes sense for space saving, interesting stuff!

This is an epic job, nice ingenuity too! Looking forward to your updates ;)

Cheers Andy!

I wasn't really into Rallye's but getting into this has made me realise just how much work and money must have gone into them just to sell only 5000.
There are a lot of parts which are unique to this model and makes you appreciate why they were twice the price of a standard GTI.

Also, I was working on it the other day and a news report came on the radio saying it was the 25th anniversary of the Lockerbie Disaster.

I never knew until researching the Rallye that VW America lost its CEO and marketing director on that flight.
They were returning from VW Germany where they had been discussing the possibility of selling the Rallye in America.

The plans got shelved following the attack.

My mate in California has the original us spec rallye that was sent to the US ahead of the directors, he also knows of the rally version with cage, and in vw white and blue livery, I think that one is in Canada, any other rallye in the USA is a grey import !

Even Im getting interested in this re-build!!! Not really knowing that much (anything) about engine rebuilds, it's interesting to see it happening.

I bet half the fun for you is sourcing the parts… That the challenge isn't it??!!

Made a start on building the motor back up this weekend but only fitting the rings and assembling these into the rebored block…………

Just found this thread, what an amazing piece of kit     Never really considered the amount of engineering involved.

Looks like your making good progress, love the big torque bar, did you check the Guinness book of records
