Lemon Yellow Tin top Restoration

Post

Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to the forum and VW scene in general. I've been looking for a Mk1 Golf for a little while and last weekend finally bought a 1981 “N” model fitted with a 1.6 Polo engine. This is my first Mk1 and first restoration projection, I hope you all like it. Below are some pictures of the car the day I got it home.

I had planned to drive the car for the next couple of months until the tax and mot run out, but the plan changed and this is what the car currently looks like. A lot of work to be done.

Looks a good project. It surprising what horrors hide underneath those plastic arches. Are you putting them back on ?  Nice colour too.  Keep us updated.

Thanks. Yeah I suspected there would be rust under the plastic arch trims, but hoped it wouldn't be that bad. I suspect the arch trims were bodged on to hide the rust. Everything seems to be help on with long wood screws. I think the car probably started off as a project and was just quickly put back together to sell, this is my impression after spending time removing parts from the car. Anyway I was looking for project and something that will keep me busy, and I've certainly found it. No the arch trims wont be going back on but some rear stone guards probably will if I can find some. My plan is to restore the car to as close to the factory "N" spec as possible with maybe the addition of different wheels, suspension.

As its been raining all day I started making this. Luckily my dad already has a roll over jig for a mk2 Escort so I only need to make the bracket to fit my car.

And the rest of the steel to finish it off. Hopefully I will get it welded and finished off tomorrow evening after work.

Bolted the wings and headlights back on and went over to my dads to finish the roll over jig as it was easier to line up and spot weld whilst bolted to the car. Took a quick picture on my phone whilst I was there.

Pictures of the jig to follow

Hi, nice looking car to begin with. The yellow looks spot on. Rollover jigs are a god send, make life so much easier.

Good luck with the restoration. Matt

Thanks. When I was looking at mk1's, the yellow ones always took my eye and that's partly what made me get this one. Hopefully the jig will be a big help.

Thanks. I was told the seats were out of a Polo. Yes I will be putting mk1 seats in with no head rests if I can find any.

Plans are a bare shell restoration with the car been restored to the original "N" spec with maybe the addition of slightly lowered suspension and different wheels.
