"I know the answer Mike, you could 'donate' me your car to look after for you, I'll let you see the photos of how Scrat is doing. It would be a bit like moving a flat that doesn't allow pets and having to give away a dog or cat to a friend and then receiving the occassional update.
Or you could just tell the wife its time to move back to the UK where they do have decent MK1 body shops, if she decides top stay in Austria at least you'll have a nice quiet drive home !"

I hear what you're saying my friend and it's not the first time it's crossed my mind.
But I have to be fair to Austria, we pay the 2nd highest taxes (overall) in the world for a reason.

I know I'm only JUST 50 but when you are in Pension as a normal person here, your standard of living and therefore life is so much higher than back home sadly.

So with or without Scrat, I'm staying but thanks for the offer all the same!

Sorry to hear your bad news Mike, But I do have a solution, and it's close to hand.

http://www.steyr-motors.com/

get these guys to make you a 'special' bullet proof, bomb proof, and 'nerd' proof wagen. You could even have the small but not insignificant gun carriage on the roof as well.
Drive into that suckers….

I'd run a quick one up in 'photoshop, but I've just changed hard drives and have'nt re-installed it yet, but you get my drift.

On the down side, it might be a tad thirsty.

Hope you get it sorted.

What were they trying to park, a flippin tank!?

So sorry to see that, I'd have the right hump too. Keep the faith, metal mends :)  No real consolation I know but you'd miss such a cracking Mk1 ;) Very honest of the muppet that did it, quite surprising they owned up.

At least they owned up to it. I doubt you'd get that honesty here in the UK!

Have you checked it for magnetism!?

Why the picture of the door hinges? Has it pulled them out of line? :o

He did own up that's HIS only saving grace!

When you say, "Have you checked it for magnetism!?" I'm guessing, did I run a strong Magnet over the paint work?
Yes I did when I looked at buying the car and as an ex Car Salesman I don't miss much to be honest.  ;)
Or didn't

As for the door hinges.
It looks like with the force of the impact it's 'Squeezed" the door hinges to the left and up against the A pillar (punched it to the left if you like).

I'm really most concerned about what might have happened within or lower down.
The stuff we don't see with the eye and workshops that can't spot it even if you point a finger at it.  :ocf_emoticons__eek:

Then what about how they carry the repairs and as for someone with ZERO experience removing the bodykit and then fitting it again is beggers belief as far as I'm concerned!  :(

Oh and don't forget about the perfect seamless paint match.  O_o

Thanks mate and you are nuts but I love the idea mate!

Wonder what the TPFT annual premium is on a Tiger or T52 Tank is these days?  :ocf_emoticons__tank:

Skoda Fabia from a parking space way across a wide street and our streets are more than wide enough, believe me on that.
Not like back home.

But thanks my my friend.

Some cars are just jinxed.

Back in the day I had a 205 Diesel from new. About 2 weeks old someone at a traffic light junction decided he wanted to be in another lane and reversed straight back into me damaging my bumper with his tow bar.

Not long after that a large chipping hit the windscreen right in the middle and cracked it.

Then it was broken into via a smashed door window and all my cassettes (remember them) knicked.

Then outside work someone scratched all down the side.

Then I crashed into a tractor on holiday…..

All this within 12 months.

Then I'd had enough and sold it and got a 2nd hand MK1 Driver and Mini for GF.

Cheers Early-1800

I'm kind of used to the 'S Happens' factor but when it's my Mk1 three times in thirty months,  it's hard to take.

If you get my meaning.
I've been driving with a full license for 33 year without a claim against me.
I know it's only metal,  plastic and thank God no one was hurt.

But at the end of the day it's my metal and plastic and most of all my Mk1 that is frequently being graped.

I use that word simply because there has been a bunch of them recently!

Sorry to have to read this mike! I do like your car and as previously mentioned it can be repaired, I do not know what your plans will be but can I make a suggestion as to what I would be considering! One of the best VW shows in the world happens in your neck of the woods, Wörthersee! This means that there are some amazing people who do amazing things to VW's very close to you, it is just a matter of finding them and getting your Golf repaired to a very high standard! I completely understand why you are considering selling  but I hope you keep your Mk1! Nobody else would love it like you do.

oh and all the time I owned it the steering vibtrated at speed but the gagrage could never find anything wrong. Eventually just before the 1 year warrenty ran out (remember back then a car cost twice as much as a house and you only got 1 yrs warranty!) I took it to another garage and they replace most of the front suspension and steering. Garages eh?

Just like golfcabrio all the incidents in the other 30 years driving don't add up to the hassle of that one car.

Gutted for you Mike, how unlucky can you get - really feel for you.  It would be a great shame if you did sell, and I really hope that you decide to keep this lovely mk1. There must be someone out there that can do a good repair for you.

I've been told there's a Classic car paint shop not to fair from me who does Ferrari's, Rollers etc…
So I'm trying to get in contact with them and let them have a look.

Now they might know their high end Classics but whether they know one end of a Mk1 Cabrio from the other remains to be seen!  O_o

Also, my Insurance tells me that I can wait and have the repairs done next spring if I want.
Which I feel makes a lot of sense because having it painted now and then a day or two later putting a heavy cover over it and leaving in a cold damp 200 year old garage for 5 or 6 months doesn't really appeal to me to be honest!  :(

Hi Mike, I've only just seen this - what rubbish news, so sorry to see this :(

As Graham said, it's great that the chap owned up to doing this. Does that mean that he/his insurance will cough-up for the repair?

And yes as Glen says, you sound more positive this morning about it. Hang in there, you'll be glad you got it sorted

Andy, I really do appreciate what you, Glen and many others are saying and to be fair I've done the same to other poor souls who find themselves in this type of position!

Yes I am more positive this morning for the following reasons though.

I know I'm fighting a losing battle.
I have accepted it.
I can use this opportunity to my advantage, so to turn a - into a +.

The way I see this is that if I get the Classic Car Specialists to do the work say mid April next year, with a couple of other paint jobs I'd like done. Which I'd pay for of course.

Then with a full no holes barred clean and polish, I could have the car ready for the 'UNOFFICIAL' Road Trip Wörthersee 2015. - The Mk1 Golf Owners Club.

It's May time and the Country is full of VW owners and want to be owners and my car will be looking at it's very best.  ;)

I certainly didn't buy the car for financial reasons, that never even entered my head.
This car appears in the VW Heritage catalogue for 2014 as many of you know, it's rare to see one here looking as good as mine does and yet not molested.
But it is certainly unique and a one off in that sense, you want to see people standing around the 'Inner Ring' in Vienna and staring at it or taking photos.
It's such a blast I can tell you.

But having said all that, time to let go of the emotions and let common sense prevail.

Oh, have no fear.
I will stay a Club Member until I get a lifetime ban and sent to the 'Naughty Corner'.
Maybe we could start a new region of that title, the 'Naughty Corner'!

How ironic when I go looking for pictures on how the body kit is really fitted, I come across this page using Google!

Talk about rubbing salt into an open wound or what!  :(

I bet a few of you have seen that picture a number of times and not only on the COTM or the VW Heritage catalogue.
Better when it could be seen in the flesh like last weekend and not now of course.

Update.

Just came back from these Guys, who are only 10 minutes away from where I live. http://www.fa-autoklinik.at/index.html
They are reported to be one of the best in the business for repairing Classic cars in this part of Europe and do take a look at the car museum section, it's really amazing!

Didn't know they were there.  :o

The owner of this workshop built his own Classic Car Museum and everything you see in it and I mean everything belongs to him.
If you ever get out this way in the warmer months, it's a must see and If there's a few of you I can arrange a private viewing with lunch etc…

Anyhow back to business.

First of all I p$ssed the Son off I think.
Because he looked at it for no more than 30 seconds and said, "Yep, if you leave it with me now you can pick it up next Friday finished." Then started to walk back inside. To which I replied, "Wow, hold your Horses there mate."

We had a bit of a ding dong and he was telling about the paint will be hard enough to cover straight away and they work on 4 or 5 Mk1's per year etc… (hate to admit this but I was painting cars and drying them in an oven while he was still on breast milk)

Which was when I said, well that's all well and good but those cars are not my Mk1!  O_o

So we came to an agreement.
I will leave the car there on Monday for the Insurance Assessor to look at and then I will put 'Scrat' away for winter and we will do this in the spring next year.

To be honest, I don't give a flying fruit cake how hard the paint is in theory, I'm not covering fresh paint for 5 or 6 months and leaving it in an extremely cold, damp garage, simple as that.

Here's a pic of how he looks right now having just came back via a building site.
My best friend here is a long time personal friend of the owner but we had to stop at one of his project sites on the way back.  :ocf_emoticons__surrender:

Thought I'd camouflage the damage with the 'RAC Lombard Rally' look!  O_o

If there is a bright side, I have the classic rust spot at the bottom of the windscreen which has to be done professionally and that will be done at the same time. Giving me time to save some money.

After all that, I'll have the car looking the best I can do on my budget and see what price the market can stand.
After such a long time away from car sales, I'll get one more chance to pit my selling skills up against a buyer, looking forward to the challenge.

I won't divulge the price and my car can be the Christmas Special  :christmas:  in my competition 'GAP Season 3' 2015-2016!
Guess the price 'Asking Price' of this MK1?
