Mk1 Golf Cabby

Hi bit of a whinge really, I've had my mk1 golf for nearly 10 years and since then I've had no end of idiots saying that they can do this or do that only to fail miserable. I ask them to do a job and I'm very specific at what I want…I get a price…I come back for my car and guess what….job not done right complete with crappy excuses but still wanting payment.
I love my mk1 cabby but unfortunately I wasn't adorned with mechanical skills but does that mean I should put up with idiots touching and generally abusing her!!!!
I'm hoping to sort out a new engine, interior and lick of paint over the next year and I was hoping if you guys could put me in touch with someone who can do a decent job and has a proven track record.
Rant over !!!!!

Unfortunately no one will take the same care and attention to the details as you will. To pretty much all garages out there it is about turnover, get it, get it done and get it out!

I understand completly what you are saying about what goes on. My daily recently went for a service with a garage I use for MOT's (the strictest around) and they decided to use WD40 to 'grease' all the door hinges! So for a couple of weeks all I could smell was WD40.  :ocf_emoticons__BangHead:I know it sounds petty but it's that sort of thing that can really annoy.

I had no skills either. You only learn by doing. The more you do, the easier it becomes to do the next thing. I have been accused in the past of 'wielding a spanner like a cow handles a musket'  :lol:Now he comes to me for help  O_oGet a tool kit and get stuck in mate. it's the only way. I've found the guides on here unbelievably helpful and there's always someone that will have done it before and can advise the best way to do it.

I agree with the Guvnor in that she looks great.

Thanks for the support guys im over near Ashford, Kent. Overall she's not bad, I've tried to look after her the best I can. Borednow I think your right, gonna have pick up tools and get more involved  O_o . I've got her on air ride at the moment but I'm thinking about taking it off for coilovers and 15" wheels.

It's not not an easy task to find a decent mechanic who you can trust. Best way is to do it yourself if possible, I know a lot of jobs seem daunting but once you start a job, you have to finish it!

WD40 on the hinges :P That'll just wash what's left of the grease off :P  Doesn't sound petty to me.

I agree with the above - have a go and what you'll learn you'll never forget.

I've only had to send my Mk1 to a garage once and I'll never do it again! The work they did was fine but they didn't protect my drivers seat - imagine what it looked like after a week of their greasy, oily arses had been all over it!  :(

I'm lucky in that my Dad loves to tinker so I've learnt a lot from him over the years. However, I've recently completely stripped and put back together my whole interior by myself - you just need the can do attitude!

Plus I'm a girl so if I can do it, so can you  :)

Unlucky :( I just had my mk1 in a garage, turns out something caught on fire in the bay whilst it was there. Singed a loom cover and warped my grill . Really miffed! I had also just replaced all the rubber petrol hoses with the correct size ones, now they have put an 8mm one on a 6mm fitting,  and a 6mm one on an 8mm fitting! Rookie errors…  It was pi$$ing out fuel! Not what I would expect. Next time I'll do it myself thanks.

If the air ride is on and working I'd probably leave that alone!
From what I understand it gives a better ride than coilies. You'd have a spend a fortune to get a better ride than that!
You should be able to adjust the ride height so it'll run 15's if that how you want to go.

Nothing like jumping in deep end though

Good luck

Finding a good mechanic is hard mate but they are out there and there's plenty of help on offer here. As said above nobody is going to take as much care as you would and with most places charging more than £70 an hour labour it's worth trial and error mate.

Best of luck

The last time I trusted someone with my cabby they forgot to fit the oil splash shield under the rocker cover:ocf_emoticons__BangHead:That was the last time I trusted a garage for anything other than an mot!

22CE03EA-FB0B-4BDB-ADD1-D36FD1382AB2.jpeg Well after a few years away from the scene I'm back after buying another Mk1 Golf Cab ( I just love em)
Anyhoo this one drove like it had rocks in the tires instead of air, after a strip down of the suspension and some of the running gear I was horrified to find the level of bodging and dangerous work that had been done although the bodywork had been polished to mirror like proportions
I was wondering if there is anyone out there that can upgrade the front disc of my cab, i wanna try and keep it standard but I also wanna live lol
Also are there any cab owners on here that live in the South East that fancy linking up after this pandemic

Recommendations and word of mouth are your friends here. Dont be scared to ask to see what they are working on and get a feel for the standard of work. Specialists are good too, a lot of companies have found a market in looking after the retro stuff and thats all they touch.

Oh and don't assume vw main dealers are squeaky clean either. I could tell a lovely story about the vw main dealer who let 2 teenage valeters take my 230bhp show car mk2 g60 out for a joyride while it was in for mot…….

Hello! My first post here - having a look since I got my Mk1 cabby back last week. It had been with a bodywork 'specialist' who had been tasked with tackling the rust just under the hood.

To my horror, I've found that they have completely bodged the job and I'm absolutely devastated. I've had my motor for over 12 years, and this is the third person I've taken it to (first two people kept it for some months then decided the work was too complicated!!).

Do you know of any reputable bodywork specialists in Suffolk or the East of England generally?

This is turning into a woes thread. Mind you… I've just bought a cabby(from a mechanic), mmm. So in the list of to dos and when I bought the car he said "the brakes probably need bleeding". So I've got to the first caliper. Why does it look odd? Ah yes, no blinking bleed nipple. Oh well let's carry on with his other list of disasters….. Do they make a nodding dog that does a sideways movement? Cos I want a dash full of them.

Mine came from some goon masquerading as a "mechanic" too…. god the amount of bodges I've had to sort. Worst was wheel adapters fitted with cut down cross threaded bolts which caused me to lose a wheel while pootling down the road…. also he kindly made some story about the v5 being at his house in amongst some paperwork but showed me a pic of it, when I eventually got it after I had to fill out the request to dvla myself I found out why he had deliberately hid it… 21 owners and cat c write off 🙄 cheers mate. Though I probably should have insisted on seeing the v5 so thats probably my fault for being trusting

Haha it's good to know I'm not on my own here, yesterday I noticed little slivers of rust on my parcel shelf it seems that the window frame has rusted to the point of no return and those brakes continue to give my sphincter muscles a good work out but on a positive note I have found an excellent garage who specialises in classic cars…he recently did some work on our Mini Moke doing exactly what we requested to the letter so the Cab is going to pay him a visit for a week or two.
Hopefully will get all the work done correctly….she's also due a set of 4 tyres as some numbnut has put 4 different brands of tyres on her….🥺
