Mk1 project slow

Since my brothers Mk2 then mk1 1600 gti  20 years ago and his 2 mates Mk2s that were front feature in the old school golf extreme iv been hooked on the badge since a wee boy. Iv never actually owned anything other than mk1s mk2s and corrados.

I came across this shell located in Plymouth  for sale on eBay and after not meeting its reserve and speaking to the owner a deal was done. I was more that delighted with the price.. This is a long story

I purchased it from the owner of a Motorsport company selling engines at 40k+.. The guy building it decided to buy one of the Motorsport guys other customers completed mk1s for 15k which he said was near a 30k build instead of finishing this. So he gave the shell to him in payment for the engine work he had done..
It was restored by a classic car firm with new panels. Mostly VW. Front panel, rear panel, sills, wings arches bonnet etc then painted in Chrysler silver… I thought with the stuff I had laying about it would be worth the punt..
Shell arriving after a long haul

Good man from Shipley

In the garage for hibernation

So after having had this shell for nearly 2 years i thought it was time to raid the loft and the bank account and start putting some bits on it.. My last project rooked me for a long time spending every bean in it, so I want to be a bit more wise and take my time more with this..

I was going to 2.0l 16v this with a 9a I had from a corrado and Kr i took out my mk2 that I 20 valved last year.. That was a a reshell of my blue mk2 which I started in 2007 and completed in 2009 it got totalled by booze fuelled maniac sitting at a junction… (Its currently on YouTube with 804,000+ views and has a huge dent in the side)

Anyway after doing a couple 20v now and the Kr and 9a requiring £ spent on them, I spotted a good VRS in the scrappies with the lump I got the loom turbo/ everything for £400 so the decision was made….
Mid engined combo?

Stored in my dub nut mates garage for a year:)

I'm just going to be going for 220bhp to 240bhp as that'll be more than I want in this…
And so it begins

Iv jumped the gun and missed out a lot as iv not posted earlier…
But here's what's done mechanically so far..
New..
Wishbones
Rack
Ball joints
Hubs
Petrol tank
Filler neck
Rear drums/handbrake cables (might disc eventually)
Powder coated tank straps and rear axel
20mm machined spacers fitted between the drum and axel
Poly bushed
Fk supersport plus coilovers

Anyway I got bored and impatient on spending time and money on things i couldn't see so decided I wanted to have it look like a car before it went like one…

I fitted my green tint campaign glass that i saved from my first mk1.
Unfortunately the screen with top green tint was cracked in storage so its a clear one for now…
And I need to source a regulator for the drivers side and rivet in the runner bar.
Unfortunately like far to many others an aftermarket sunroof was fitted.. (It must have been better weather in they days)
Which is a massive pet hate so I ordered a finished carbon skin from lws.

Had some original trim etc but the copy stuff is new and some of the finish looks better to me…
So I bought and fitted new bumpers
arches
Duckbill
Hella Lights
Hella petrol cap
Side stickers
New Hella reg lights
Powder coated reg plate holder
Stuff I had..
Window wiper motor
Handles
Mirrors
Wind deflectors
New cab grill
New headlights
Front panel plastics
Driver and cab side trim..  Only because the original trim holes were welded up and the filler wasnt 100% absolute perfect..
So I redrilled and fitted the trim with new clips… So I'm happy now….
Here's how I left it on satuarday

I'm fitting an original single headlight grill when my red grill surround trim eventually arrives! (Months!!!!)

Looks like you're a 20v turbo conversion master mate. Both of those MK2's look awesome. I am currently doing one as well. Check my sig for details.  :)

Cheers mate you learn as you go. Cleaned all the red bay in the peeing rain sitting in the drive with the bonnet down toothbrush in hand an a squeezy bottle of petrol! That takes the fun out it a bit.
It's had a full nut bolt rebuild with all genuine vag parts even down to the fluids.
Managed to convince my old boy to get the mk1 in his garage thou so hopefully when I get to the bay il have plenty room light and time to get it neat and tidy.

That's how it looks for now but as soon as I get an engine stand and a spare couple wkends il get the lump in..

It's out of an octavia… I think it just depends on what comes up and what ur budget is.. Tbh I think it's best getting the lump and box ecu etc as the majority of other stuff usually gets junked.. Then u can pick bits up as you go..  I'm running emerald on my Mk2 and for starters planning on running the Mk1 off the same unit till I can afford another..
