Yes I saw that vzi ad for that golf and that's the reason I asked on here, as I thought that was mega cheap! But didn't see it for sale again! Huge profit for owner, blimey

Sold mine few years back and struggled to get £2500 for it, it was a complete car but needed full bodywork.

Tell us what year it is and it will be far easier to give you a more exact price of what it is worth

eg 1976 with 100,000 miles in mint condition - Fortune!
1979 with 100,000 miles in mint condition - still very good money
1979 with 100,000 miles and in need of resto - 2-4k

Ask Dubboy for more info as he is a bit of an expert in this field

1983 Mk1 Golf Gti 1.8 - Black
1999 Toyota Hi-Lux - White
2008 British Bulldog age 1 - Red & White
2009 Range Rover Sport - Black
2012 Mitsubishi Canter Tipper - Orange

Wow what a price jump. Is it really worth that?

 :offtopic:
So 'smudger 1980',
Four years between the adverts and the same car has quadrupled in price?  :)
Must be fair and say from the two adverts, the car has not been touched in that time, not cosmetically anyway.

Not heard of any car in the last ten years that's done that, anywhere in the world but how knows!  :ninja2:

But as you say is it really worth it?

I've found (although I've only had a quick look) interesting points between the two adverts.
Clearly it is in the same car.
Same number.
From Hampshire.
The car has not turned a wheel so to speak in four years. Same mileage but no crime.
The really interesting point is, it's the same seller. Same street, in the 2009 advert the garages of the Bungalows are all white.
But in the 2013 advert, his garage door has been painted green but check the brick work of all the properties.
There are the same.

Just doesn't feel right and if it doesn't fell right, then it's most likely not.

I know I've gone way off topic but I'm just backing up your comment and info above was screaming at me to be told.
Not meant to offend anyone, just my observations, maybe all pre-80 GTI's have increased in value X4?

Nice observation skills Mike and I do agree with you.

I think I read on here recently that only 96 S1s are left which is only going to push the prices up again.

I don't think anyone would be offended by your honest heart felt opinions mate and to be honest they are spot on. I think maybe that seller is chancing things to see what response if any he gets.

As the old saying goes, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

That silver one has been for sale for years.
Goes up everytime.
I guess its in no rush to sell so why not? Someone will crack sooner or later and buy it!
the same seller bought a series 2 gti for 5K on ebay and advertised it the next day for 12K! Sold it after 3 years of trying for 9K I believe.

seen this happen a few times now.house prices go down ,bank rates negative so whats next to invest in?...the good old car.so be very careful as i think cars have maybe 18months of inflated prices before they start to fall big style when the attention returns to the housing market.imo of course

Its 1979 with 82,000 miles and will be mint by the time I've finished it. I'll ask Dubboy

So how much are you looking to spend on it, with the low miles it has and a lot of potential money wise!

I just paid £900 for a 79 Gti but it needs putting back together fully, and painting, its only done 99k engine wise but hasn't moved for 10yrs!

I think it will cost around £4k to put it mint including a full respray, full service, cambelt, MOT, new trim bits etc. But I think it will be worth it, its solid just a little brown at the edges.

So 4k plus asking price, dependent on asking price which you won't include, it wouldn't be a bad buy

Lol, the sort of people who are in that game ate not buying MK1's I can assure you.  They are buying high value classics and flipping them.

As for the price of series 1 GTI's the only way is up.  There are virtually none left in the UK, they only made them for the UK market for 2 years, the pre 79 ones were all imports.

Good standard series 1's will be worth a fortune in 10 years and is deffo an aprieciating asset.  I have a series 1 im curreny restoring, I bought mine as a shell and ive had to track down and fork out for all the bits but thats half the fun!

Get it bought mate

I think at this time, this car isn't right for me. He's asking a lot for it, I can see it will be worth it in the long run but for now I just dont think I have the ability to buy. However I think my friend is going to buy it and just dry store it for a few years, so I may get the chance in the future to buy it off him. If he doesn't buy it I will put it up here for people to check it out.

Confused….. the guy on the clubgti link sold it to 4star classics,he was touting it about asking for offers saying he wanted it to go to an enthusiast….obviously the money grabbed him first.

Money talks as the saying goes. I dare say 4 star classics saw the post and contacted him directly and he sold it to them, they spen a bit of time cleaning it up to punt on for a profit.
