So do you reckon Goly will be finished by the time your my age? O_o

If you remember I turned the big 50 back in Jan!

Just kidding mate but if he's not ready, you can always buy another from 'Season 2' of 'Guess the Asking Price' this Winter!

Have a great day mate!

Cheers   Mike

Goly certainly will be back on the road before I get my bus pass ;) Im aiming to get it back on the road for the AGM next year! I need to get cracking I think

So whilst I decide whether to drop the engine out and lift the body up or to borrow an engine crane and lift it out I decided to pop the dash out
As with the engine, there were no major issues. I labelled all the wiring and bagged up all the screws to help when refitting it.
Couple of piccies for you all to have a look at!

Before I got my grubby mitts on the dash it looked like this

I found one of the instrument cluster screws missing and a damaged cluster! Might have to try and plastic weld it to secure it better when I refit it.

How it looks now

Morph says hi!

Might try and get the seats and carpets out tomorrow if the rain stays away!

Hi to Morph!

That instrument panel hole - you may get away with a large washer to hold it in place - depends of course how cracked it is but I've done that before

That's a very good idea! Cheers for that

So my brother and I battled against the rain today and managed to get a bit more done on Goly. I'm not sure if I feel a bit sad stripping Goly to a bare shell or if I'm excited  O_o I just want to drive my Mk1 again.
Enough of my blubbering! So today we managed to get the dash wiring out, the heater box out and the sound proofing up, the pedals have been removed and the engine bay loom was removed. A few photo's of todays efforts….

a quick pickie of the heater box just in case you haven't seen one before  ;)

This is the stage we are at now and as always we were under the watchful eye of Morph

Whilst examining the excess cavity wax that had dribbled down into the footwell I noticed a small screw tucked away in the corner! You can just see it in this pic.

I then got thinking that this screw is like a fossil! 31 years ago it was trapped in the cavity wax that was oozing out of a small orifice then covered up by a moss like substance us humans call a carpet! It has now been found and I will cherish it forever! (until I chuck it in the bin   ) I thought it might be a screw out of my head because I have always had a screw loose    A close up to check out my screw in detail.

I am rapidly running out of space for all of my parts so I am contemplating selling Ruby, my other Mk1! Well not necessarily selling! When I went to price up the blasting, bodywork and spraying, the guy at the bodyshop said he was after another Mk1! On the way home I got thinking and I thought I might ask him if he fancied taking Ruby off my hands and in exchange he could media blast Goly!  This would also free up my garage for all of the parts. I will be having a serious think about my plan and then I will put it to him and see what he says! Fingers crossed it will save me a few hundred pounds
Well folks, that's all for today! Not long until the AGM

LOL nice fossil!!

Not a bad idea on the MK1/blasting swap, as long as you're sure

As much as I would love to keep Ruby I think she will be better off with someone else, it also means I can give Goly the TLC she needs!  :thumbs:The bodyshop owner is coning to have a look in a couple of weeks to see if he wants her  :thumbs:OK so I have had a couple of weeks off due to being on holiday and working hard but I got stuck in again this week, all of the interior, except the headliner and the door internals, has now been removed. The back end is jacked up ready to have the fuel tank removed and anything else that isn't needed on a rolling shell!    So far so good. Side trims removed and arch spats too! I found a nice bit of corrosion behind the spats but I wasn't surprised!

Rear bumper and roof rack removed (just realised rack is still on in this pic :ocf_emoticons__BangHead: but it has definitely been taken off now )

No holes in the spare wheel well but a small bit of corrosion in the usual spot

Behind the offside spat  :o

The bodyshop will love me  :ocf_emoticons__BangHead:

Nice empty interior!

And last but not least, a little bit of a rusty bullet hole on the back end  :ocf_emoticons__2guns:

Next task is, fuel tank off, anything else that is not needed on a rolling shell to come off and on July 1st the bodyshop is popping around to arrange when I can book in for the blasting and spraying  :thumbs:That's all folks ( for now anyway  )

Looks ok apart from the arches, should be easy enough to get sorted ;)

The underneath seems solid to me but I think both rear inner and outer arches will need quite a bit of repair work!

Managed to get the fuel tank out today, I removed the exhaust then took the filler neck off and found this that I didn't even know existed!

Then dropped the rear axle so I could get the tank out.

I also removed the handbrake cables and dropped her back down on all four wheels.

I think I'm nearly about done with the strip down, not much else I can do because I don't want to let water in if it rains! I have spoken to the bodyshop and he is happy for me to do work in his workshop so the windows, doors, rear lights, brake/fuel pipes etc might have to wait until then to be removed. I'm sure I will find more bits and bobs to take off over the next couple of weeks though.
I might try and borrow an engine crane from somewhere so I can get the engine out!
I think I will also be getting Ruby out the garage this week so I can start storing some parts in there!

I decided to remove the engine yesterday! :ocf_emoticons__BangHead: What a great idea when I don't have an engine crane and I was on my own! After battling with it for about an hour, trying to decide the safest way for it to pop out, she finally dropped onto the deck

and this is how my naked bay looks at the minute

Today I had a little play just to remove some bits and bobs. I took off the front calipers, wheel arch liners, Gear lever and shift rod, the aerial and some grommets. So I'm just on to the little things now.

That's all for today. The bodyshop owner is coming around on Tuesday to have a look and let me know when I can get her picked up! Exciting times

Well done on getting the engine out on your own unaided. You must have had 3 shredded wheat for breakfast!

 Weetabix is my cereal of choice
And if anyone is reading this and thinking of taking an engine out on their own, DON'T do it! Either get help or get an engine crane! It was not easy, it got stuck on the engine mount and I nearly dropped it onto the flywheel!  :P

Well, the bodyshop owner and sprayer came yesterday and we had a good chat. He is happy to do the work in the timescale I need and he has gone off to do me a written quote for all of the work that looks like it needs doing, obviously there could be some hidden surprises but I am prepared for them  :lol:Today I decided to have another play with Goly and took off a few trims here and there, sunvisors removed and headliner grab handles taken off. I then thought about the front wings and decided to take them off too  :thumbs:I was pleasantly surprised to find that the wings have been replaced before and all of the bolts were easily accessible and the wings were off within 15 minutes

An arty semi naked shot  ;)

The guy who said he might be interested in Ruby as payment for the blasting has decided that he has too many projects on the go and is not interested at the minute but thats OK, I get to keep 2 Mk1's for the time being  :thumbs:Here they are in all their glory.

Goly will be making her way to the garage mid August (6-8 weeks from now) and I can't wait! I have never been so excited! HaHa!  :lol:I have also decided to try and have a go at removing, cleaning and refitting my headliner as I want to try and keep it! The head liner is in good condition for a 31 year old so I think it should be saved. Wish me luck with this as I will be out of my comfort zone!!!

Good luck with the headlining, it may be worth warming it gently with a hair drier first if you think it's in any way a bit brittle - they can split so easily sometimes.

Looks like you have a 4x4 Golf now!
