'79 diesel LHD

No time towork on the Golf today, the Midget needed a cylinder head rebuild, so just a quick photo. I've put a skim of filler over the repairs, but it's virtually the same colour as the primer, so you can't really see it. I'll attempt sanding tomorrow. Never tried before, but it can't be that hard, can it?

Looks like the hatch will need some welding too

That scary moment when your car goes patchwork.  You never know if it's going to be back to one colour in a few days or a few years.

Nice to see so little filler being applied, I see it used too heavily too often, less is definitely more with filler.

It's going to be blue again tomorrow, I hope, depending on how the sanding goes, but, as you say, it is a bit scary…

Handbrake cables fitted and adjusted - a bit hard to refit the lever as the new cables seemed to be too short and would only just project enough to fit a single nut to each while pulling them as hard as I could with mole grips…

The fuel filler pipe is now connected to the tank properly and the car starts, runs and stops again. The sanding and filling on the rear panel is taking longer thah expected, though…

Admire my new handbrake lever grip:

This is how far I could adust, with no dragging and brake on hard at two clicks:

Any ideas for the final finish on the grey rear bumper? I've done the hot air gun trick, but it's still a bit splodgy.

There's also a small hole in one corner which would need filling, but with what?

Can it be treated like a black one to make it look shinier? With what?

I've got a spare black (I think) bumper which has been painted gloss black, which I could strip, but I'd like to refinish the original one.

Sorry about all the questions…

Trial refitting to see how much more preparation is needed:

All done for this time:

Paint:

Bumper and lights:

The dodgy corner:

It's a bit dusty, and the finish is not wonderful, but it's a lot better than it was:

Now there's a bit of tidying to do on the wing, and on the hatch…

I've always used one of those shoe shine stick thingys on my bumpers. You know the one with the liquid polish with the foam on the end.. not sure if they do them in grey though. Have heard of people using "boiled" linseed oil and even smooth peanut butter! again I guess it's the oil that is the thing that works. worth a try I guess?

Still going strong, though the clutch is definitely on its way out. I've done 20k kilometres in the year since I put her back on the road, and I'm lovin' it!

Latest job:

After more than a year of running everyday with the clutch on its last legs, I finally got around to changing it and fitted new gearbox output seals at the same time. An easy job with the box out, and certainly a lot easier than lining up the gearbox splines lying on your back with your feet in the rain…

It's all back together and running fine again, and it's nice to have enough power to climb hills again.

Happy New Year to all!

Beautiful day today, so we went for a quick (350km) drive uo to Cap d'Antifer.

The Diesel is still running strong after almost 18 months and 20k km.

Next jobs are going to be cleaning and checking the injectors and a bit more bodywork. I also finally found the missing rear door trim strip but had to buy a whole door to get it (20 euros)

I repainted my bumpers with Bumper paint, which you can buy in grey, dark grey, and black. It made mine look brand new. I carefully removed the chrome trim, painted, then refitted the trim. Lasted well too. Dont know where you can get some in France, but in the UK they sell it in halfords.

thats great:thumbs: a friend of mine used teak oil for the bumpers on one of his cars, may be worth a try?

New brake hoses fitted with no fuss, once I'd remembered they were reverse thread on the Girling calipers. A bit of paint always make me happy too:

A trip to the scrappy provided rear belts from a Mk2 so now I can transport my daughter and her friends, yippee!

Hi,

still going strong here - we went to Brittany for Easter, a 1500 km round trip, with only a rattly exhaust to fix.

Saw some sandy beaches:

And a new sticker to cover a rusty bit:

I'd better sort the rattle now…
