I am so jealous of your exacting standards!!

I am doing my servo and linkage ad we speak but just by hand and as much as I am happy with the result it isn't a patch on yours.

I wish I had the knowledge and skills !!

Keep up the great work

Chris

Mk1 gti cabby...the project so far...now engine detailing!

Thanks,

I'm sure yours is spot on. It just takes time, and lots of it.

I had zero knowledge before I started, but have learnt as it's gone on ( with the help of my Haynes bible)

You got a build thread going?

Not in the same league as your build but I am slowly getting more knowledge and confidence, which I think is the main thing.

Had it at 1 of my mates Uncles bodyshop today and over the winter, money dependent, going to get the skirts and mirrors resprayed and a few wee dents taken out. He is a registered repairer for ferrari, maserati and porsche so he knows what he is doing and he has told me not to touch the chips and original paintwork.

Amazing stuff! I must admit I was chuckling away to myself looking at some of the pics as I couldn't work out what half the dismantled bits were, but it looks like you've been pretty thorough documenting what everything is and where it should be!

My Mrs thinks I'm well sad!

Like to see her put it all back together without the pics.  :shhh:

Next time I should be able to do it without pics…if there is a next time!

Slow progress over the last few days…just couldn't be bothered.

Got some bits in the post.

New wishbones, and balljoints. Will be selling my anti-roll bar and wishbone/anti-roll bar mounts if anyone's interested?

New rear engine mount (the old one was knackered)

Started putting the new gear linkage bushes on. It's not until you campare new with old, you realise how shot the old ones are! Hopefully the gear changes will be much better. Does anyone know where the 2 x rivet looking pins go? (bottom right of the picture below) I can't work it out! Also…should the red rubber bush push all the way through the mount? As you can see from the pic, it only sticks out on one side.  :dontknow:  :dontknow:

Finally fitted the throttle and cold start valve to the inlet.

Engine is ready on Monday so need to crack on with prepping the engine bay this weekend! Got some surface rust to sort, weld the repair plate to the bulkhead (clutch cable ate through it), prime and de-grease.

The car's not mobile at the mo so got a mobile sprayer coming out to give the bay a fresh coat and 2k lacquer before the engine goes back in. £100…bargain I think!

Your thread was my inspiration…i can blame you for my, now slightly OCD obsession with clean engine bits! Lol
Seriously though, if my engine turns out half as good as yours, I'll be a very happy man.
You keeping yours nice and clean still I hope?!

Been working hard this weekend prepping the engine bay ready for painting.
Not the easiest of jobs getting into all the nooks and crannies.
Waxoyl is a nightmare to get rid of too.
Quite fortunate as there were only a few minor surface rust patches, which I've taken back to bare metal and prepped ready for acid etch primer.

Prime it all up tomorrow and re-paint the gearbox.
Engine come back tomorrow too, so that needs painting also.
Got this week off work, so full steam ahead to get it ready for the bodyshop.

Hi Riku,

Thanks.

I got them from Autoleathers. Do a search on Google and you'll find them.

Bit more work today…soooo slow progress!

And I had an absolute nightmare too. Argh. More about that in a bit…

Acid etch primer…

High build primer…

More high build primer (going for the camouflage look!)

Bottom of bay stone chipped…

Started on the engine too…

Dirty…

Cleaned with wire brush, Eastwood Metal Prep and pre-paint…

Masked up ready for painting…

Painted the block and rocker cover…BUT…

Just as I finished, standing back admiring my work, the biggest gust of wind came through the garage door bringing leaves, dust and general sh*t onto my new paint.  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

Hadn't had a single gust of wind all day! Typical.

Will have to remove the leaves and twigs from the block tomorrow and see what I can do. LOL.

Not funny at the time. No pictures of the painted block at the mo for obvious reasons.

I managed to paint some other bits once I'd calmed down…

Engine bay is getting sprayed tomorrow. Hopefully will have some better news and updates to report…Hopefully it's not a windy day!

Thanks mate.

I can't wait till it's finished too!

Engine bay sprayed today. Overall a good job and looks the business.

Engine bottom end painted too…

Also painted the head and rocker cover (again!). Managed to get rid of the leaves and dust from yesterday's nightmare!

However, didn't get the finish I wanted on the rocker so need to do it again.  :(

Think I've had enough for this week. Going to have a long weekend off and come back next week with fresh eyes.
