South African Mk1: Lots of updates

Howzit,

I hail from South Africa. I had my car for 3 years and then I decided to convert it to the Euro look. I got tired of the SA look and the fact that there were so many Mk1s running around that looked like mine. I'm in the process of converting mine to the Euro look but this is what I have done so far… All comments welcome! Oh, and before you all climb onto me about the sticker on my windscreen, at the time I made it I was unaware that it was only reserved for those cars that were featured in the magazine! OOPS :D

So, I got my first car 4 years ago. A stock 1300 Chico (the one with the 14" rims). First mod that took place was a set of 15" rims and a 40mm drop.

It wasn't long before the bug took over and I splashed out on some nice mods for my car. Debadged grill - Eyelid - Cherry and crystal tailights - Clear indicators - Fiberglass spoiler. These mods totally transformed the look of mycar!

A few months down the line I got bored with the look and decided to convert from the double lights to the single lights but, I wanted the crystal ones! So, I bought those along with a new debadged grill. I loved the new look because it made my car look wider and lower from the front. I also sprayed my door handle inserts the same colour as my car. THe old aerial was ripped out for a nice little beesting. This was how it stayed for the next 2 or so years…

Over time my outlook on cars changed somewhat. I began to appreciate the older cars a lot more, the original. This is what gave me the idea to convert my GOlf to the oldschool look. Well that and the fact that there were now just WAY too many GOlfs running around looking like mine! :D
First in order, OFF WITH THE BUMPERS!

This allowed me to have a good look at the body beneath the bumpers beacuse it will now be in view. It was green but, there was no clear coat! Bummer!  :?  Either VW South Africa cut corners to cut costs or my car was in an accident and the guys did the same. I'm leaning more towards the first one… I made my own crosshairs, this was mainly just to motivate me to carry on, haha!  8) It also wasn't too long before I found my first bumper. I sanded it down, sprayed it up and on it went, RAD!

This was the first time my car had that oldschool feel to it. I had seen a GT where the bumpers had a red stripe along them. I liked this but, wasn't sure it would look nice on my green GOlf so, I sprayed it the same as I did the door handles…

I was really motivated at this point to find parts I still needed:

- Plastic fender arches
- Oldschool fenders
- Mk1 GTi 2 piece spoiler (long shot)
- Plastic front bumper
- Oldschool grill

I became a "scrap rat" at the scrap yards every day after my studies. I managed to find the arches off a Fox (uh, mistake #1) one of them was buggered. I also found a rare grill (it's not symmetrical) with the chrome edging.

I fixed up 3 of the arches all nice and fitted them to the car. You will see I also made those stripe stickers for the bottom of the doors. I bought the vinyl and made them myself. I got the sizing a bit wrong (thicknesses and gaps) but, it's fine. I also got bored and sprayed a red stripe around my grill. It looked sort of nice! :D

Next up was that grill! I was dying to see how it looked on the car so I ripped off my grill and put the old one on. WOW, it made my car look 20 years older! Looked like some grannies GOlf on beefy tyres!  :D I also made black stickers to replicate beading along the doors. Beading is hard to find!
You will also see a new sticker made it to my windscreen. A lot of my inspiration came from the UK magazine: Performance VW. Little did I realise that it was a sticker only reserved for cars that actually made it into the magazine! Lol, they can fly over here and take it off if they don't approve cause I digg it :D

I finally sourced a front bumper from  one of those old white and yellow Citi GOlfs. It was nice and strait unlike all the others I found that were warped and wavey. I also started work on the grill… It was cracked and the chrome was all bent and dented. I wasn't worried because I was going to spray it red anyways so, I bent it strait, filled up the holes and sprayed it red.

I couldn't find that spoiler I was looking for so I ordered one from Autostyle   I'm not going to rant over the cost to get something so small and light from JHB to CT, @##$!
Once on it really was the cherry on the cake! I had the front bumper off at the time as I was spraying it and this is what the front looked like, S#1T HOT!!! I wish I could drive around like this all the time!!!

Once the bumper was sprayed I fitted it. I put my old orange indicators back on. I took the cherry and crystal tailights off and slammed the originals back on. I also made a blackout sticker for under my rear licince plate…

I only recently starting modding in my interior. I'm taking a sbtle approach to it. I replaced my doorpins with nice ally VW ones. I also have nice new pedals.
I thought it would be a nice idea to carry the red edging theme of my front grill into the interior. I sprayed the chrome strip surrounding my dash red and I really like how it came out! Crickey, that stock steering wheel is a real turd!!

Below are just some pics of my car as it is now. I live in Adobe Photoshop so, natrually, the pics have been tweaked a bit ;)

No more crosshairs, this is actually how the car looks now…

And lastly BEFORE AND AFTER! :D

Heh, a long post! Hope you enjoyed it. You guys in the UK may be laughing at me for trying to do this to my car :D It's not easy finding old VW parts here in South Africa! :)

Forgive me but I haven't posted here in a long time. I'm going to past my posts from a South Africa VW site here…   Here goes:

So I've been wanting to do the whole blackout sticker thing for a while and I finally decided to go buy the vinyl in my lunch hour the other day. R50 to 2m of matt black, very nice vinyl, the same I used in the past. A buddy of mine bought the actual kit from autostyle so I used it to create templates  8)  It's all done, pillars and the tailgate but, I still need to do the inside of the door pillars because I can see green through the gap. Thanks to GT and panic-mechanic for the help and advice!

I'm very pleased with the result. Took me the whole day to do the tailgate   Reason being that the stickers don't go under the window rubber!!! I have no idea how to take the rear window out, seems like a mission to me….
Some trial and error. You'll see I had to make it 4 piece because the rear windcreen wiper caused some headaches!!!

BTW, I'm now in the market for them oldschool fenders  8) Scrap yards here I come!

 12pm

Well I just finished the door pillars. Took ages to replicate the face shape of that center pillar behind the doors but, so worth it! No more GREEN gap!

So I hauled out the ol compressor today because I was just itching to spray something and I have only ever sprayed with 2K once. I decided to spray the tappet cover because mine wasn't looking so nice anymore, chrods rubbing on it cause it to look all scratched. Had to do some spot filling because of the little "dings" it had. Also sprayed the cambelt cover in satin black. THe red came out with a bit of orange peel, alas. I'm still stoked with the results and now 'm more motivated to learn about spraying a bit more. Let's see how long it stays cool lookin' for, haha! See the work below.

BTW don't you think I got the coolest compressor you ever seen :!:  Big Pimpin wit that thing in the front of the house today  8) All the hot girls do a double take when they joggin' by 8)  :D

I finally had the balls to sand my cars body   Going Oldschool has now kicked into gear. I'm buying the old fenders new on Monday from a place in Woodstock. R300 a pop not too bad I guess. Fingers crossed they are the oldschool ones cause I had to really explain to them the difference between the Citi ones and the OS ones.

Started by sanding the holes:

All filled  :D Now to sand it all  :?

Right arm spazzing out but it's finally smooth!!  8)

On goes some primer. Hmm not as smooth as I thought it was.    For some reason where ever there is body filler the paint keeps going matt. I have no idea how to fix it!!!

I'm going to buy the right paint for my car in the coming weeks. The proper 2K paint and the clear. For now I'll just make do with Plascons Emerald Green  8) Only had like 2/3 of the it so I just did the strip to see how it comes out. It's a bit lighter than my cars paint so I'll be spraying it onto black tomorrow. It'll do till I can paint it all properly along with the fenders!!  :D Look at my rare camel cream grill, HAWT!!!   8)

As you can see from the above picture and the one below I also spent a lot of time on the grill. I got it to fit as it should and I sprayed it with MS Primer because I'm also making the front bumper look like new, well trying to   The grill edging will be sprayed with a fresh coat of red. Side bits of the grill didn't make it to the shoot…

So this is how it stands tonight. Very happy with the progress. I could do this all day every day! I love the bumperless look. I may just work some magic so I can rock the look when I feel like it, maybe on weekends or racedays. Must just make a plan with them indicators   It reminds me of the famous Hayabusa Mk1, HOT!!!!

The pedals have little nuts and bolts and they screw onto your metal pedal itself. Quite easy to fit. As for the vinyl it's all cut by hand! I spent hours making the templates, trial and error! Worth it in the end!!

So this is the beading I bought from the scrap yards. 2 years in the making, lol! I got 7 out of the eight pieces. Just need one for the rear. There are only 6 here because the one fender one is still at my parents house and one of them is a runt that I am going to modify to fit. Plus I scored big time in finding the beading strips for the bottom of the cars side, brand new!  8)

Did I say new

Black gold, white gold!

Me stabbing my finger trying to get the clips off, haha, The things we endure for our cars

Well I started with the beading the weekend. I managed to prep the one side of beading. I don't want to drill the holes for the clips in my car so I am going to find another solution. I tired double sided tape but it is too thick so I will find something else. It's coming together now!

The sanding and cleaning took a while.

I used spot filler for the small dents and shortened a long piece to fit the length of the rear door.

Here is the front fender one fitted, one one piece for now till I find a proper way of attaching them, and yeah I know its a bit skew

As you can see the double sided tapes doubled up sticks out too far. One strip is too thin to use

I also sprayed my front bumper properly as the last time I sprayed it I ran out of paint

Well I managed to spray up the rest of the beading for the left hand side. Came out very nice all the holes are filled and smooth now. I tried using a double sided tape that is the thickness of celotape. The stuff sticks really well but the rear door beading keeps popping off. That strip is not 100% strait and keeps lifting in one spot so I'm going to have to fix that. The others hold perfectly though I think I may stiff try industrial strength tape…

I just love the front fender with all the old buts on it, hence the reason I took another shot of it!

Here she is all beaded up. Makes a big difference to the side of the car! Just need to do fender arches and change the rims and it will look the part!

Now that's what I'm taking about!

Well I got a new lens for my camera so I had to take a shot! Supa wide :D As you can see the car is as it was last time I posted in here. Still haven't got the beading on   To make things worse my car was broken into yesterday. Smashed my drivers window when I was home and stole my phone. Ja the one time I leave it int he car, damn!!! I'll post pics of that soon. But she is back to normal. Insurance cocked up and wouldn't let me have it fixed saying I said I told them I broke my own window to get my phone and key, what idiots. I had the case number from the police and all! Anyways, glad it's Friday. Doing a bit of a road trip this weekend so it's going to be nice to drive the open road again, screw the traffic!

Well here are the pics. Car was broken into last Thursday. Left my cell in the center console by mistake. 2pm at home for lunch, bam gone! What a mess   It's all sorted now. I beaded the passenger side of the car and even put that strip that goes under the doors on! Must take a pic of it. Used contact adhesive so I hope it will work! Here are the pics:

Edit: I finally took the pics of my door pads so I can start designing the new ones! I want black and uh, what do you call that kilt material, ah man I just cant think of it right now. Basically like the Mk1 Gti I think.  8)

Well this week has been more productive. I started work on the front arches. I managed to get them painted with MS primer and then sprayed them. Came out sick! I luuurv MS Primer!

Also finally got down my first doorpad design. I took a shot of my existing drivers side one and then used it to create a design. I want it to look oldschool so I used some tartan in the design. This design is minus stitching so that will be on the design soon, but this is an idea of what I want to do! I'm sure I can do it :)

yummmmayyyyy!

Arches were in a bit of a sad state. They had already been painted so I don't feel too bad for spraying them :) Here they are primered and one sanded.

Haha, this shot makes it look like a banana!

Yes please!

" x2!

Gave her a wash

Also decided to add the crosshairs back, I like!

I dont know I just like this shot….
