Welcome to the site an good to hear there will be another restored Mk1 in the Cannock area, would i be right in thinking your golf photos were taken at K&D bodyrepair.

Also with regards to colour stick to an original colour, if your going to the trouble of stripping it down then keep it original there are far to many bad modified golfs around, plus you'll get a better return when you decide to sell.

if your insisting on a colour change i'd go for atlas grey… REALLY nice colour

but i do think silvers sot on mate

you keeping her a 1600? with the right mods they are swift little engines without taking to much of the character away

Nice one dude.  Only just joined the forum myself and this is the first thread I've looked at.  Also bought a Mk1 at the end of ast year and after visiting the Nurburgring in my Beetle, I have a new found desire to get my golf in good shape to take back to Germany with me.

Keep up the good work ;)

Barty,
excellent looking project you've got there mate :D

Seeing the head off reminds me of when I did exactly the same head rebuild, grinding in the new valves with cutting paste - sadly didn't have a unit like yours so my mother's dining room table in front of Neighbours had to do!

I think  you've got the head bolts stuck in some cardboard??  As far as I'm aware these are a one use only item.  I think they are called stretch bolts because of how they react when torqued up.  They only cost a quid each from gsf though :D
Hope this helps.

project update its been a while !!!!! 10/7/08

hi i ve been a bit quiet on updating how my project is going .

heres some things that i have done the car is stripped down now as from last update nothing left in it i have now got my inner wings and the one that was rotten has now been cut off and replaced with the new geniune one. i am just in the process of plating the gap where i had to cut out the cancer on the bulkhead.  engine has been stripped and painted gloss enamel black and looks pretty good gearbox to has been painted. engine mounts radiator cowl brake mech and servo have all been painted too black. new wings have arrived too so now all i need to do is finish welding the plates weld on the front panel then the front is all complete. ready for preping.

hi people a quick update amd some more pics.

over the weekend i have done a fair bit more or though i will say it does nt seem to be movin on very fast which is dissapointing. but heres some pics see what you think.

took both wish bones off suspension legs steering rack arb brake pipes just to make getting the front end welded on and also easier to prep and spray.

bolted the engine and gearbox back together and i am happy with the way they turned out also just lowered the body onto the engine as i ve had a new inner wing i wanted to make 100% sure it fitted and it did like a glove measurements were all good

my need list if any one can help is a follows

full engine gasket set
complete rear panel ( tryin to save for one off crazy!!)
front brake caliper seal repair kit
cambelt
engine head bolts
new wishbones or mountings/rubbers
new pair track rod ends

a big list at the moment i know but you lot are always helpfull if you can

hi, just another update another day of hard work !!!

today well i did a multitude of things i managed to get some more gas so the welding has continued. managed to get the front of the drivers side inner wing replaced and fully welded on checked its all straight and it s looking good. also sorted out the clutch repair panel which was basically screwed on so i thought i would weld it in and fill it nice and flush. also filled and smoothed all the welds i had to do round the new inner wing. welded on the front panel as it was only tacked. bolted on new sump gasket oil pump and sump so the engine is just waiting for the rocker cover to get plated  and then finally i decided to start and sort out the sills as i dont know why but all previous owners seem to just batter the jackin points unless its just mine .

some pics
engine nearly done looking good i think !!

after

the other side of the inner wing welds they need grinding and fillin and smoothing

hi fantastic work, your clutch repair panel, is that a galvanised stick on one welded into place?
