Brakes - Rear Pressure Regulator positions

Post

Hi all,

I've noticed a few threads about rear brake pressure regulators recently, and have seen them installed either on the master cylinder (see https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=technical%2Frunning-gear_2%2Frear-brake-regulator) or slightly further down the brake lines - mine was the latter as below

Can anyone advise the reason for the different positions? I intend to stick mainly to the brake set-up as designed by VW, (discs up front plus rear drums, but I think it looks alot neater to have the regulators attached directly to the m/c, unless someone knows of a reason why I shouldnt…

Thanks:thumbs:

They are different things as far as i am aware, the things on the bottom of the master cylinder are pressure regulators. soft top only, the tin tops, gti anyway have one near the fuel tank. those  hexagonal thing are one way valves, if you open one up they contain a spring and ball bearing..

Thanks for that mate - I've just been looking in Haynes (probably shouldve looked there before posting) and you're spot on.

I guess my next question is, can the one-way valves be connected directly to the M/C? Ill do some more research on that one.

I have a tin-top so will hunt out the regulator near the fuel tank. I think i remember from the strip-down phase seeing a rusty blob with a spring attached, near the rear axle. Ill have it lying about somewhere - will likely need replaced but have just seen prices of new ones  O_o

They are residual pressure valves (they maintain pressure in the brake line). They are supposed to be fitted as close to the MC as possible so more of the line is pressurised. I guess the reason VW put them where they put them is that the run to the rear is not a single line from M/C to the rear flexi, so instead of having another coupling, they used the valves instead.

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here

Ok thanks - if thats the case, and im re-running new lines, sounds like i could locate them on the M/C, given theyre only a short distance away anyway.
