Mk1 golf 1.3 conversion to 1.4 16v polo engine HELP!

Post

I have a 1.4 16v ready to put into my 1.3 I will be running it on bike carbs to make wiring easier and a little more pokey, was wondering if anyone has done it before and what I'll need to do/parts as I can't find much info on it, thanks in advance!

it'll pretty much drop in, you'll need a mk2 16v kr ecu and wiring for the ignition, unless your old dizzy will fit but im pretty sure it wont? if not a later mk2/polo vac dizzy will go, one from a car with hydro lifters (3 bolt fixing rocker cover)  pretty sure the 1.4 16v is same as later 1.3 anyway.

if you want 5 speed you'll have to make a custom gearbox mount, using half the old 1.3 moutn welded to polo mount, you might have to find a mk2/f polo one not sure what the 1.4 16v box mount is like

I've done it/had it done - My advice would be to try keep the fuel injection. Bike carbs can be really unreliable and tempermental - if you are going to do it, get a decent manifold made and recon the carbs. Get it set up by someone who knows what's what. Daytuner nr Harrogate is pretty much a wizard with bike carbs!

I already had a 5 speed conversion so didn't face the mount problem but getting the engine in was a doddle.

I've fitted the polo afh engine into my small block tin top. I'm running the AFH engine on a mk2f polo gt gearbox (Ahd code), a mk2f flywheel, and most importantly a late mk2f slim starter motor which is essential if you aren't running the standard 6n gearbox. These can be quite difficult to find.

Ignition wise I'm running the TCIH vacuum advance distributor from a polo along with the matching ignition coil and amp.

Carbs are CBR-600 on a homemade manifold. With the needles shimmed slightly and 138 main jets.

Gearlinkage is a combination of mk1 golf 4 speed and polo 5 speed parts.

Overall it's not to bad an engine swap to do mate.

Also I have never had an issue with the bike carbs after it have set them up. Plus they make a good noise!

Sorry to highjack the thread slightly but what else would be envolved in order to retain the fuel injection?
Also, is there any reason to go for the earlier 1.4 16v's over the later ones, which look to have a different rocker cover but is there any other difference?

Cheers,
Matt

basically wire splicing and add a suitable fuel system!

for fueling either fit a gti fuel tank, or drop a post-84 cabrio, scirocco injection or any petrol engine g40 shape polo lifter pump in the tank, and the swirl pot from under the car

main pump a gt or g40 pump or any mk1 injection unit would do, plus a fuel filter from an EFI car such as digifant mk2, any petrol mk3, any g40 shape polo etc. fuel lines you could use rubber lines all the way up, or plastic ones off a more modern VW will probably fit ok

main thing with the early and late lumps is the early polos have the CE2 fusebox same as 90spec mk2 gofl and mk3, so in that way it might make it easier for you. after that they switch to mk4 golf style setup which uses a fuse plate and a seperate relay carrier, no real 'fusebox' anymore

Think I will go for twin 40's as I know a good welder who can make a manifold for me and makes wiring easier! And I've read that I will need a mk2 polo ignition set up but didn't think they used electronic ignition?

you'll need a mk2 16v ecu and loom, or find a vacuum advance dizzy that fits your engine. afaik the mk2 golf/polo dizzy doesnt fit?

The thread on club polo said to use those parts but looking at the picture of them side by side it doesn't look like it will fit but I'll have to figure that out when u get hold of an engine

if its slot drive liek a mk2 16v then theres the 1.9 pug gti dizzy, plus some kind of saab. the trouble with those is the caps have different lead fittings i think. i would go for the mk2 16v ecu :)

1 - Earth to battery -ve
2 - KR ign controller plug
3 - TCI-H plug
4 - Black - KR ign controller & TCI-H ign live - terminal 15 side of coil
5 - Green - Coil trigger - terminal 1 side of coil
\- red/black - spade is for the isv control unit, the main wire is the rev counter feed
6 - Brown - Earth to cylinder head
7 - Blue/white - Temp sensor feed (black collar sensor, same as mk1/2 dash temp)
8 - Dizzy plug
9 - red/yellow - Fuel pump relay earth trigger
\- black/yellow - idle switch feed (12v feed with throttle shut, not needed on carbs)
