DX Engine 2.0L Conversion

Post

Evening All

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

I'm about to convert my engine to a 2.0L but I wanted some info on conrod lengths to get the right stroke.

I have the 92.8mm crankshaft from the Mk3 and Wossner 82.5mm pistons. Will the conrods from the same Mk3 engine be ok or do I need a different length conrod?

I definitely do not want to change the block as the car has all matching numbers.

Cheers guys! ;)

If the mk3 engine is a tall block, then i would guess that they would be too long and the piston would be well out the top of the block..Sorry i know guessing dosnt really help...

No worries bud…I'm guessing just as much as you are 😂
I think the Mk3 block is taller, now that you mention it. I can't find anything on the net that mentions the conrods.

If your using the original DX block then you can't use 2ltr tall block rods as they're 15mm longer.

The other issue is you need 2ltr short compression height pistons with a 20mm pin….2ltr tall blocks have a 21mm pin in many applications.

From memory you need the 3A compression height type piston rather than an APK or 2E or AGG type.

Std DX compression height is 32.2mm, AGG, 2E etc has 30.9mm compression height. As the stroke increase will push the piston up by 3.2mm you need the shorter height pistons to bring the crown back down…plus the correct gudgeon pin size to suit the std DX 144mm length rod.

To check…measure the woosner pin o/d and the distance between the centre bore of the pin and the top of the pistons.

Thank you for the detailed reply…I really appreciate it.

After doing a bit of reading, I was thinking to use steel rods, the same spec as the standard DX ones.

I'm definitely sticking with the DX block as the car is all number matching. I'm trying to keep it as original as possible but just with a little extra oomph  :$

No problem at all.

Steel rods are way overkill unless your planning on reving over 7500-8k a lot….Std rods are very good and more than up to a bit more power…some of my budget circuit race engines still use them supporting 180hp and 7k+ rpm without issues.

DX type steel rods will be 144mm too and use 20mm little ends just like the O.E ones.

I was looking at the wosner 2ltr 8v pistons earlier and all I could find was listed for the 2E & AGG tall block 2ltr…which will have 21mm pins.

I'll make some calls and see if I can find some 3A pistons but they're probably NLA now like a lot of older pistons. 3A blocks are also known as the 'bubble block from mid 90's Audi 80's…not many cars around now let alone doner engines unfortunately….so very little call for the pistons anymore.

Thanks mate…I really appreciate it. I'll give you a call today for a chat, if that's ok?

Yeah sure fire away…if I miss you leave a message or txt me a contact number and I'll get back to you.

3A pistons NLA….can still get pistons to do 1900 (1870cc) conversions with a std 1800 stroke crank though.
