Looking good…
Strange mixture of cars, lots of Fords, 1 Vauxhall  and your Golf at a Ford place?
Whats the magazine article about if you are able to say?

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Things looking up after getting a flat tire before Christmas and realising I had lost the key to locking nuts, finally got the guy who is doing the body work on my mk2 escort to remove them. Looks like I will get to drive it this summer. Mot coming up and only did 1200 miles last year

Also my 17 week old got to have a drive in the garden

So after about a year of waiting my favourite style of grill has come into my possession. Missing one end but was a good price.

After looking at it once at home and asking a few questions turns out the inner lights are fixed totally different between early gti’s and late cabbys. Turns out my cabby had same lights as mk2. However this wasn’t going to put me off so I searched the garage to find something to space them with.

Ok it doesn’t look pretty on the inside but hey that’s hidden away 99% of the time but once the trim is on and the new end and badges I think it’s going to look just how I want it.

How did you get the grill to fit? I have a 1 piece grill and always wondered how to drop a 3 piece in. Does it screw up to existing holes or what? Did you just use the lights from the 1 piece grill you had?

Yea same holes however the ends have two screw holes but you can only use top ones as the hole in the front panel for the lower hole is too big. So basically screw it on the same as the single piece grill.

The inner lights were a pain and required some initiative thinking (bodging)

2 years almost to the week since last mot I decided to say sod it a chuck it in hoping nothing to major would come up as not long spent ££££ on the engine.

And first time in exactly 10 years she has a clean sheet. Tester said it was the cleanest example he had seen in years and the underside has no sight of any rust or rust coloured metal and never been welded. He couldn’t believe it. He has been in the game many years and knows his vws and said that it’s still running the factory original brake pipes which are corrosion free.

Saying I’m chuffed is an understatement since when I bought it it was in a field with grass growing through engine bay for 5 years.

Owned this now since Oct 2015 and I still think it’s the best 1k I have ever spent.

I also finally got round to fitting the black vw grill badge which I’m not 100% on as looks like a de badged grill which I personally don’t like

Great news!

I must admit, I'm not a fan of the black badges. Much prefer the silver - even if it isn't 'standard'.

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here
