This is where it all started for me!

Dano,

Have just had a look through your post and I'm almost speechless. I confess that I am a 'standard' fan. Like you, it would take me at least four hours a side to change a set of rear shocks. There is little hope of my acquiring the skills needed to heavily modify a wheelbarrow let alone a cherished motor. Now having seen your car I am faced with a similarly impossible, it seems, task - clean and shine to mirror perfection.

My compliments to you for your stunning car. AJ 8)

Thanks AJ, nice of you to say so.

Had it for 10 years come July. The wheels are back today and look good.

Engine work to start tomorrow!!   :ocf_emoticons__icon_mrgreen:

Looking forward, like quite a few others on here, to seeing your re-furbed wheels. If you say they are looking good I'm prepared to take a small wager they are awesome :) What are the plans for the engine? AJ 8)

It's head off time tonight then a look to see what else is required.

It's been burning oil for years so it's about time really. 😉

What's the diagnosis then?

Shouldn't imagine it will be much than than valve stems seals/guides and a set of rings for good measure

Anymore photos Dan?

Last night was just an hour or so 'prep time'.

Ramps out, car up them, hoses undone (well one was seized so its soaking in WD40!), rocker cover off (small damage found inside), breather pipes off ready for the next bit.

Don't know the situation yet. Photos will come!! :ocf_emoticons__icon_mrgreen:

Engine work has begun in preparation for the Germany run. Over the past 10 years of ownership I have spent a small fortune in engine oil so it was time to stop the smoking and smell.

On the ramps in my garage at home.

Luckily A5OPY  and I had replaced the injectors a couple of years ago so they came out a lot easier than last time!

The heads off.

And its on the floor without scratching the paintwork!!! Phew!!  :?

After that it was into the workshop for the overhaul.  :)

Back from the engineers.

Finially got the injector seats out. I'd tried myself and felt the 12mm hex starting to spin round! Thought it better to leave them!

If you need new injector seats then you need the longer ones, not the short stubby ones. I've ordered the correct ones blind from VW Heritage so I'm hoping the part number from VW is correct!! (They were)

These are the correct inserts for the DX engine

We spent last night putting the piston rings on and refitting the pistons.

I was going to ask you about that. When the guys tried to fit them, they couldn't get them to fit. Classic Parts had the in stock - 2 weeks delivery though so I'm hoping they are the long ones! My 'insider source' (Bert) checked the part number supplied by VW and confirmed that it related to the long ones so it 'should' be a correct order!! 🙏

What can I say? They recognise a unique car rather than a common or garden Rivage!!!

I'm brew boy on the job. Learning a lot though. Time to get cleaning shortly though and take advantage of an empty bay!!!
