Smudger's 20vt Project A.K.A Patsy. (Update 07/06/2015 Got the love back)

It's certainly has been a labour of love!

The turbo is now back from the machine shop but I've spotted that the braided fuel lines really are not up to the job and have already started to crack and perish as it is just single wall rubber in a fancy braid, so the lines will all have to be replaced once I stick the head on. Probably will end up doing this next month as the GTi is currently taking precedent in both time and money with the RS taking whatever money is left 😭

Fuel lines are plumbed in bar the return side on the tank. Cylinder head is back on.

Some headlight wires weren't connected up properly, plugged everything bar some minor things up and prayed for the best…then I connected up the battery.

No loom fires this time, got the engine cranking over but the starter doesn't sound very healthy at all. Got to finish up the fuel lines, stick some fuel in and see if she will wake up!



Hopefully be running before the end of the week.

I'll get a video of her running but first start up I want to make sure everything is functioning as inteded. I'd rather have a running car than a video of one catching fire

Quick update. Fuel lines are on but the tank cap won't come off so had to fill it up from the sender unit!

Tried turning it over, no fuel pump prime or spark.

Fuel pump wasn't actually connected so with Rubjonny's never ending wiring knowledge i've been slowly going through everything. Repinned the fusebox connector to run a live to the fuel pump so i'll test tomorrow if that works.

After that i'll run through the earths and lives again, OBD port is now plugged in so can plug in the laptop and see what is occuring in the electrical side of things. Hopefully the ECU hasn't decided to die.

In short, here's what is left to do

- Find why the ECU isn't triggering the spark
- Weld passenger seat in
- Tidy interior wiring
- Re fit dash sections and generally tidy the interior
- Bleed brakes and clutch
- Tracking
- Misc. electrical items for MOT (handbrake warning light etc.)
- Mount ECU
- Double check EVERYTHING

Then after that start on the little things, might install an interior back in now the cage is gone, perhaps wire up the heated seats.

Also there wasnt an engine earth and the starter was drawing current through a jubilee clip on the TIP!

Proper earth and the car roughly fired into life. Put the 240cc injectors on for the time being and it's running, so that's taken a load off my mind!

Traffic was crap on Friday mate so took me ages to get to cov, only had an hour at my mates before we went out - we will meet one day though haha

Won't idle properly and only goes into 1st and 2nd but she's moved under her own power!

Ditched the smoothed cam cover. I'll repaint this one in due course but I'd rather get things like the gear mechanism working instead of making things look pretty.

Integrated Engineering TFSI plug adaptors on


034 Motorsports coil pack cover fitted. Had to do some mods to make it fit on though.



Also started giving the interior a clean and it's slowly coming back together. Even if I did forget to stick the passenger heater vent pipe on so now have to drop the lower dash out again  



Also decided that if she is staying in my possession the standard ECU is getting chucked and a standalone system is replacing it.

So yeah, gear linkage, passenger seat, sort out the rear fogs and handbrake warning light switch and then decide what the plan is with her.

So, with all my projects, both ongoing and waiting, a few of them had to go.

Unfortunately Patsy was the first casualty and she got collected last week. A lot of interest but most people wanted to break her and I didnt have the heart to. The new owner is building her up double time and can't wait to get some pics of her. Hopefully this build thread can be continued!

It's a shame mate but good to see the build will continue! Hope this thread does too, I've been following it since the start!
