Restoration thread for my 1983 Y-reg Mars Red GTi, non-sunroof model
Cheees for all the comments guys, I really hope to finish it this year.
I'll mull over the fuel line clip repair, it will break my heart to have to prep for a weld on it at this stage, I was thinking of a screwed P-clip but I know what you mean G60RGE. Either way it's a right pain in the ass.

Started building up a few bits for the engine bay as I gradually work towards the front of the car.

Then I started on the steering linkage. I had this glass bead blasted, but it was only on removing the masking tape that I realised some had got into the bearing for the pinion shaft. It says these cannot be dismantled, but a bit of boiling water soon had the bearing out along with the shaft, fully flushed. Then put it in the freezer for a few hours, and re-fitted no bother with interference fit. Re-greased the internals and rebuilt. Now I'm just waiting on some Powerflex bushes to re-fit the rack to the car (I thought I'd bought these already!).

Been working away at the Mk1 whenever I get a chance, but was never going to get much time over the summer hols. Anyway, have made some progress so thought it was time for a wee update.
The new Crazyquiff fuel lines are run in and tied in across the bulkhead.
Steering rack installed with new Powerflex bushes, new tie rods, new gaitors and new genuine clips. Have installed some of the refurbished bits of the gear linkage too, which were all glass bead blasted and zinc plated, then fitted with new linkage bushes.
I will be wrapping the steering rack boot in heat shielding in case there are clearance issues with my stainless manifold. I wasn't planning on wrapping the manifold, but I would be keen to hear opinions on this.
I'll let the pics do the talking:-

Oh, that looks well Pete. Everyone has an opinion on everything and I have listened to both arguments for wrapping a manifold. Personally on the mk2 I decided not to and it does not seem to have adversely affected underbonnet temperatures/performance or scorched anything. I did insulate the steering gator.

I need some advice if possible. I stripped the brake servo to get it prepped for powder coating, it is an ATE 9" servo. On removing the rear rubber boot, there is loads of what looks like disintegrated foam inside the white plastic housing. Was this originally some sort of foam cushioning for the servo return, or is it just a build-up of crud from over the years. See photos:-

My guess is that is some rudimentary 'seal'.
I've got one in the garage that will be fitted at some point. When I get 5 mins I'll see if I can get a pic of what mine looks like.

Pistolpete's Mars Red Mk1 GTi restoration
Mine had this foam on it ,I think it was about 4 inch squareish , I think I took it off as the mk1 servo I took off didn’t have it .

This is what mine looks like:
Not the best pic but I can't take the boot off as trying to get that linkage on the re-threaded rod was a b'stard.
I'm not sure if it's purpose is just to stop non-linear movement of the push rod. Given there is a boot over it anyway I'm not sure any muck would get in there.
I'm at a similar stage to you (although nowhere near as many shiny bits) so your posts are helping me remember what order I need to start putting stuff back in!!
What brake MC are you using? I bought a VW T4 one (4 output) but I've got to figure out how to get the brake light sender in - t-piece I guess…

btw - I think mine is a Mk3 servo hence the slight difference.

Excellent info Paceman, think the photo says it all. I agree, looks like it's just a packing to stop it moving off centre. I'll find something suitable to use.
I took literally hundreds of photos as I stripped the car, and keep referring back to them for the rebuild. It still has me scratching my head sometimes though!!
I bought a new 22mm master cylinder from VW Heritage. It's a Mk2 16v one, also 4 port.

No worries, glad to be of some assistance!
I took mine apart nearly 20 years ago, with the intention of getting it re-built pretty quickly…I didn't take any photos! Stupidly threw bits away as at the time you could get spares (I'm still kicking myself over the wheel arch trims!)
You might be my go-to source of detail (apart from a very oily Haynes manual!)
Keep up the good work!
