Original Campaign FVT

Post

My latest acquisition. A one owner Campaign with 30,000 miles on the clock. Needs a few bits doing as they all do but its got to be one of the most original ones I've come across.

Paint depth guage shows all original paint.

Unbelievable amount of paperwork with it including a hand written log by the original owner of everything ever done to it,at what mileage and at what date.

No seat fade as its been kept undercover for the last 27 years.

ts done 400 miles since 1988. I've even got the original cam belt and air filter in a box of old parts that came with it!

I'm not sure owning such a piece is all that its cracked up to be! The original paint is irreplaceable which kind of puts me off wanting to drive it! I've had it since October and am still undecided how to tackle it in terms of how to present it. It kind of needs detailing to get the best out of it but the original patena of it is also worthy of preservation. Its a hard one to call.

It helps being on the front line of the club but its no guarantee.
Occasionally you get to hear about hidden gems  before they become common knowledge.  I was first made aware of this one 3 years ago.

The original owner knew it was time to sell as he felt he couldn't continue to give it the care it deserves.

There must be a few like this, hidden away by the original owners who are now getting on in life.

Must've cost a fair bit with that mileage?
Looks like a full service, clean and tidy and wash and it'd be good to go?

I'll try and sort it for the summer.

I was waiting for that one!
The owner knew what he had and we agreed a price of which we were both comfortable with.

That's exactly how I feel about mine, if it ever gets damaged and needs some paint I don't think I could ever want it back - plus when someone asks you who painted it and you say Volkswagen - you know they probably don't beleive you.

What was the paint thickness on your sunroof, mine was pretty even all over (110 microns if I remember) apart from the sunroof panel which was only 60 microns - no idea why.

This one measures between 75 and 85 pretty much all over. In fact we were amazed at how consistent it was.

edit: I mean the whole car not just the sunroof.

What a beautiful and original example, you are a lucky man to have found this.  I agree with your comment, this is almost original concourse condition and I know of concourse judges who have deducted points due to the paint finish being too good for the era of the car.  Depends what your intentions are.  I would go for a light polish just to get the lustre back in the finish and leave it at that.

Yummy but as said every time you use it, you'll feel frightened you'll damage it and guilty about adding to the mileage.

Any more out there with a lower mileage???

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

At the moment I'm happy to just look at it and rub my thighs in a Vic Reeves manner!

Sure to be more come out from hiding over the next few years as the prices continue to climb and the old skool get older.

Gotta love that, I'm precious about my golf and its nowhere near the quality of yours. Couldn't risk damaging it, more's the pity.
