My Mars Red Mk1 Driver - 16V on twin 40s

So they were dug out and made their way onto the Driver, replacing the Raceland coilovers that it came on.
Loads better!
I picked up a Crazy Quiffs stainless filler neck and fitted that but couldn't get the cap to sit quite right, so off i came and it was sold on.
I cleaned up the mild steel one prior to refitting.
A Driver grille badge popped up on Ebay so that was bought and given the satin black treatment before fitting.
And I had a brief play around with a Kamei rear spoiler but didn't think it suited the car so moved it on.

Red was the winner, so the hunt for red stripe front seats began and soon enough a pair popped up on eBay in Manchester.
I stripped the fabric off and gave them a good wash, getting rid of all the old disintegrating foam backing.
The grey seats were sold on and in went the red set. The drivers side bolster was badly worn so I sourced a used rear seat backrest cover and unpicked the centre panel. A trip to see trimmer Darren Archer in Bradford had the seat repaired and all looking good.

Reverted back to the OE and Postie rears…
I dropped in a set of my Mk1 mats with graphite edging and a white highlight stitch. These compliment the white stitching on the Momo prototipo really well.
Momo released a Heritage prototipo wheel with a nicer horn push so I sourced the horn push to give mine a nicer retro look.
Before…
After…
And I had bought a Newton Commercial parcel shelf when I had fitted the grey seast but it just looked too new. Dope_as advertised an original used one on here so I picked that up and gave it a clean up, repainting the rear trim edge.
(Excuse all the rubbish hiding in the boot!

I had bought a set of new repro opening quarterlight rubbers from Werk34 but just couldn't get them to fit well enough. So I cleaned up the old rubbers which were a bit crusty but only slightly perished. They came up really well with wire wool and a wipe over with turps, cleaning all the crusty dried out areas and only leaving some minor cracking.
I'm loving these!

I picked up a used Mars red bonnet on eBay
This turned out to be a bit of a nightmare, the guy I bought it from was a welder and had the bonnet sat in his workshop. It had picked up years of weld and grinder spatter. A good dose of Dragons Breath, a going over with a clay bar and then attacking it with the machine polisher brought it back. Phew.
I fitted a set of pressed plates as the ones it came with were off centre and wonky, something I could never un see once I had seen it.
And that's it up to date..

Years back I bought a set of Koni dampers and Eibach springs intending to fit them on the Sportline. I never did fit them as I couldn't bring myself to modify it.
So they were dug out and made their way onto the Driver, replacing the Raceland coilovers that it came on.

Hi Dean! How's it going mate? Mine have Raceland engraved in them at the base on the rear units. I found them to be quite hard but I raised them up a lot compared to when I got them and the higher you go the stiffer they get. I could have taken the helper springs out but I knew I'd be fitting the Konis.
It looks like Raceland still make Mk1 coil overs:

There are some specs on there /\
I wouldn't bother to refurb them unless you mean just a clean up and repaint. I don't think many places will touch the internals on them unlike the Spax/Gaz units that can be rebuilt. I'm selling my old ones cheap.

Very nice car and good work on it ,congrats mate ,
Do you considers H&R coilovers ???
I've installed this brand , it costs 700 euros but really do their job , are not too hard , you can adjust the height easily , i not regret my purchase.
Comparing raceland , it's just a world of difference……………

I've managed to squeeze a few jobs in over the last few weeks.
When I put the opening quarters in I noticed the outer scraper seals were past their best so a new pair of Vewib scrapers have gone on.
I also found the old rubber vent flap rattling about in the bottom of the door so sourced a pair of repro flaps on ebay and popped them in.
The previous owner fitted a 16V M/c and had relocated the brake switch on the pedal with a home made bracket. This was a bit rough and ready so I bought a nice new alloy bracket from Werk34. Loads better…
And I took advantage of last weeks heatwave and stripepd and repainted the front panel. The previous owner fitted a new lower panel but hadn't prepped it very well so the paint had cracked and crazed all over and was starting to let the car down.
Out came the paint stripper…
Followed by epoxy primer, white primer and white stone chip.
And a good few coats of mars red…
Built back up…
And I've added a pair of radiator grilles behind the bumper and a GTI chin spoiler for the finishing touch.
I popped a new heater blower in last weekend too, the old one was a bit temperamental and didn't always run at full speed. That wasn't a fun job to do!
