Mk1 golf gti, 2L 16v, OZ turbo's. R1 Carbs

Been after a mk1 golf gti non sunroof model for a while now and as i sold my caddyvan tdi last saturday, it gave me a bigger budget to buy one. Well once i could find a decent non sunroof model anyway lol. This one came up on my local forum in the end. After a few days, we came to agreement on the price and i picked this up last night. Ran out of fuel 3 odd miles from home but i got back in the end. Failed to start this morning, suspected WUR so left it til later. Tried again when warmer but no luck so i stuck a fresh can of fuel in. Battery had died after so many times turning it over though. Its re-charging now. Kind of hoping its not sucked up crud from the tank as i know mk1's are common for rusting inside out. Hopefully update later with it starting. I'll let the pic's do the talking I know too well about the rotten arches on mk1 gti's but think these are pretty good for the age. The fronts look fine but the rears look like this Think i'll leave the arch spats on for now lol rear valance The front panel and wings are very good, as is round the windows. Its basically bog standard other than its been lowered on weitec springs and adjustable damping shocks, obviously it wont stay like this for long haha. Got a good few things to sort for its MOT but otherwise i very happy with it. Already started doing a few things which i'll probs update again later Hope you likey

Couple of pic's as to how i left it today

Removed bumpers, grill, headlights(1 needed replacing anyway), stickers and then washed it.

Once battery recharged, i tried to start but no go. Checked fuel infeed pipe to metering head and theres nothing so looks like crap in tank syndrome. Had a look underneath at the pump and it seems someones already done the inline filter between tank and pump safety thing. Filter looks proper dirty so i'll replace that and see how i get on tommorrow.

Shame it's the rear arches and ot the fronts. Doesn't look too bad overall though.

She's back up and running again   :D

As i had the car up to remove the dirty filter next to the pump, i noticed that whoever did it, placed the fuel pump in the cradle the wrong way so they'd have more pipe to play with and fit the filter.

Now its all well and good placing a filter before the pump but they did'nt think of the excess pipe going to the accumilator, its been rubbing on the axle

Anyway, i removed fuel from tank, refitted the pump the correct way and used a pipe to go direct from tank to pump just like it left the factory.

Couple of turns on the key and she fires up woohoo!

Also refitted the bumpers, headlights and grill and then turned my attention to the dash electric's

Bought the car with no clock lights, after removing, i could see why!, there was no bulbs in it haha. I just replaced the clocks with a set i got with the car in the end as it looked in much better condition and read only 1k more than those i took out.

I just need to work what wiring goes to which guage now and that should be it apart from fitting some tunes.

Its now booked in for its MOT at 9am saturday so i intend to get the little niggles sorted by then.

Well, i did'nt make it to the MOT station this morning. My golf started kangaroo'ing now and and again as i made my way and kept cutting out. I could here the fuel pump getting louder so i aborted after doing approx 5 miles. Managed to get back home by coasting and restarting everytime it cut out!   :banghead:  , Yeah great fun hey!!.

I pulled the pump off as i had a spare, the 1 on the car was'nt original, it had a tiny filter within the infeed pipe which clogged up with grit/dirt/rust. I replaced the pump for my spare anyway(no tiny filter) and it now works ok. I'll replace the fuel filter by the metering head with a new 1 i have once i've done a few miles as no doubt that will be filling with crap instead now. I gave the car a spin and it goes well.

My next annoying prob is the oil light flashing and buzzing, its not the clocks as i tried another unit which i knew worked fine.

Was'nt all bad today though, i picked up some coilovers for ?80. The fronts had only done approx 200 mile and the rears was still in there plastic. They only crappy hottuning things but atleast i can get the height right for when i fit my wide 14's i have waiting to go on. I'll get a decent set next summer.

Also did a trip to GSF and picked up some new top mounts, dizzy cap, rotor arm and oil filter. Figured if i treated her to a few new bits, she'd play ball

Sorted the flashing and buzzing oil light, i disconnected the Gre/Bla wire on the oil filter housing lol

Also sorted the gear linkage out as you could'nt get 1st and there was a long throw for 3rd. All gears work properly now although a little stiff due to new bushes been fitted previously.

Now that i kinda happy about the mechanic's, i turned my attention to the trim.

Gave the car a wax over, cleaned the glass of the glue left behind by old stickers and then spent most of my time blacking the textured trim and bumpers using tyre gel. Looks well now   8)

Couple of teaser pic's  :P

Coilovers and rims on

I've got approx 2in arch gap at the mo but i going to give it a run tommorrow so the coilovers settle and i can see where the tyres will rub. I'll lower and trim the arches in 1 go then.

I've got 80 and 60mm of adjustment left on the coilovers.

Sounds like a good price for the shocks even though, as you say they're not the greatest. Probably better than 20-odd year old originals though!

Good to hear it's passed the MOT, means you can have some fun with it whilst the weather is just about OK.

For me without any welding skills I'd prefer rusy front wings that, whilst not cheap, are easy to replace.  But I guess that's not a problem for you.

Lowered cars, deep chin spoilers and bumpy B roads dont mix

Ripped half my spolier off earlier

Good job i removed the number plate from it otherwise that would have gone too. I did see it fly off in my rear view mirror so i reversed and picked it back up. Think i need to go to plan B

You'll also notice i fitted clear indicator lenses but i think i may go back to the amber's.

Also fitted my porsche door handles from my truck so the car is now Anti-chrome  , they also tie in with the porsche steering wheel.

Just an update as to hows things are going with the golf.

Front end now with CL chin spoiler and back to Amber indicators as i prefer them over the clear types.

Also replaced the accumilator with a brand new bosch unit from off my truck. Was hoping it would cure the starting prob but to no joy. Not many more things for me to check or replace so i sure i'll find the prob soon.

I've also had the angle grinder out on the rear arches to limit the scrubbing caused by the 9's. Only does it on the worst of bumps now.

Last but not least, collected another black mk1 gti tonight so i now have a few spares in which to make mine that bit better.

beautiful!

mate, she's a minter! Reminds me a lot of mine (what with owning a black GTI ;-))

One thing - thought about getting a hangar for your front number plate? Would look boss sat just below the bumper and cleans up the look really nicely.

Other than that, I've not got too much to suggest! I'm running FK coilovers and 14" p slots at the moment. Need narrower tyres so I can camber the wheels back in as she's not much fun in the wet!

Nice to see a minter going to someone who'll take care! Mine's parked on street at the moment. I cry whenever it rains…

Cheers Tom

I removed the hanger as i feel that they sit too far forward and abit in ya face like. Number plates are the ugliest parts of a car.

I've got some double sided sticky pads to stick the plate to the front panel.

I had FK konigsports on the front of my caddy, bloody great. I'll probs buy a set for the golf when funds allow, i'll put up with the hard ride for now.

Know what ya mean about the rain mate, i dont like seeing mine out in it either so i going to clear my garage out so it can atleast be sheltered during the nights. My caddy is in a unit so thats cosy  :D

More updates soon

The wheels. Originally bought for my truck but once tested on the golf, they worked so that was that.

14in by 8j and 9j banded steels painted gloss black and as seen on this…

1 of my fav cars from edition  8) . Rear axle on this car was shortened by 2in so you can probs imagine how they stick out on mine.

Have'nt taken any cool pic's of them on the car yet but here's 1 for abit of fun. Have'nt got any cool trainers so i thought my work boots would be a good substitute lol
