AL's "Mini Build" *04/12 - 6 months later...*

you have done an amazing job of re-trimming those 90 spec rst seats, the zolda trim is very light colour compared to the 88spec and gets marked easy   seen it done a few times back in the day, but these look real fresh 8)

what engine do you run 16v??

Cheers dude…

Engine is a standard 8v. I was going to run the car until the engine gave up, then do a 16v conv, but it seems to be going on forever!

I have a 16v, which I was given for free, however on stripping it down, I found one of the bores was badly pitted, so the build was stopped!

Cheers Andy - Glad you like!

I really need to pull my finger out and sort the other Pirelli's as I have only done the one so far!

Small update…

Been trying to sort out all the little bits to finish the dashboard.

Hazard swich is in place and working.
I have also wired up my little green LEDs for the Indicator warning lights, which work well.
Heater switch is in and working too - 3 speeds!

Currently trying to mount the heater mech in a position that will work with the front plate. Getting there now.

Also been making this:

To fit here:

It is actually painted black now too, though pics didn't come out well, so leave that for another time!

Also made a start on my door cards. Just cut out of hardboard for now. Will paint with something to help prevent moisture getting at them and causing swelling, but will be covered with black vinyl to match the seats eventually. Bought a bag of the door panel clips off evil bay too - that is what all those black bits are… The panel is only clipped in with one clip across the top in the pic as they are a bugger to pop off again, being new and stiff!

Spot the standard Gti mirror too… Got bored of the chrome bullet shaped on I had.
I did cut holes for the window winders although I think I will be vinyling over those as I won these on Ebay tonight:

Electric Winders - Mk2 by www.pix-al.co.uk, on Flickr

They are from a Mk2, though I have read that a few people have successfully fitted them, so I'm having a go!
This will solve my problem of the winder handles hitting the dashboard, due to the 6N dash being deeper than the original.

Hi mate. Loving the thread. Also loving the custom dash and door cards.

What you spraying the door cards with the keep the water out? Will you fit the plastic liner that covers the door innards up as well?

Nice

Hey Jd…

I think I will just fit a moisture barrier (polythene sheet!) with some spray adhesive or something before the door pane goes on.
The panels have actually progressed, but have not turned out as well as I had hoped so will probably be a temporary solution until I find a set that don't cost the earth!

Excellent work Al :D really cracking on now!

Really like the tach' in the 6n dash, and the new steering wheel was a good find to! Personaly I would spray the centre bit black, but thats just me   Oh and the flip key is a nice bit of work to, even better it operates the alarm to!

Really like your mk1, keeps evolving, and you've had it a long time to, proper mk1 owner, none of this instant scene fame rubbish

What tyre size are you thinking of running on the p-slots?

Keep it up!

Pete.

Really like the seats Al, and credit to you for doing them yourself! I saw these on the forum a while back and saved the picture to my desktop:

Hey Pete, yes, it is making progress slowly! I know what you mean about the steering wheel, though I do like the silver centre. The red wheel I used to have had a black centre, so this makes it feel like more of a change!

Might not bother with the P's now. Still only got the one done and dont seem to be able to find the time to sort the others!
If I do, I'd run the 185/50/14's that are on the ally cats…

Now those are stunning… Make mine look a bit crappy! Obviously a professional job and probably cost a fortune (if I keep telling myself that, I'll be OK!)

Small update today - I got the sidelights and headlights wotrking off the polo's rotary light switch.
Fogs will also be wired off this switch.

Actually got a bit of work done today/yesterday!

Sorted the last of the wiring issues to get everything that is needed for MOT (Switches/warning lamps etc) up and running.
Bolted the wings back on as they were flapping in the breeze!
Also, gave it it's first wash in about 3 years. it had that much dust and grime on it, it is still dirty!
Cleared all of the crap out of it and gave it a bit of a hoover too!

Driver side under-tray isn't going to fit though. Dash seems to have been squeezed in a little, the original tray is about 20mm too wide for the gap!
I have strated modifying it and it looks like I might be able to get it to fit.

Cleaned up some of the old red carpet too just to put something in the foot wells, though forgot to take a pic of that!

Few pics:

It actually looks quite presentable in that last shot!
Very similar to how it looked about 6 years ago…

Got out early this morning to miss the royal wedding and started looking at the drivers side rear arch area.
There were some bubbles that I wanted to wire brush back to see how bad the rust was.

DSCF6834 by www.pix-al.co.uk, on Flickr

Rear corner under the light was as expected.
Car has had a knock on this area early in its life as there is a small lump of filler right on the corner.
Rust not too bad though. Small hole that can be easily sorted.
Small hole near the tow eye too.

DSCF6833 by www.pix-al.co.uk, on Flickr

Front of the rear arch was worse than expected. Rusty around the area where the arch meets the sill.

DSCF6832 by www.pix-al.co.uk, on Flickr

But worst of all, I found some rust around the rear axle mount on the drivers side. Bad enough to have easily poked a hole through it…
This has dis-heartened me a great deal
Was difficult to tak a picture of, but you can see it here:

So - A repair is deffinately in order.
Advice sought please…  Can this be done on a driveway if the car is lifted on some large axle stands?  :dontknow:

With the right tools can be fix on the drive way… Rear axel panel isn't really a hard job if you can weld.. Just remember to mark it all up well so the the alignment is good!  Same fix carried out here  http://retrorides.prob…tion=display&thread=70255

Wow - That is one rusty cabby!

The problem I have is - I can't weld…
Been looking at welders for a while though and I am prepared to give it a go. Looks like it is time to bite the bullet and go buy one!

Well  my only advise would be buy a half decent one!! anything like a Clark 150TE, practise first!! Its not hard to weld ok but its hard to master!! :D If not theres plenty of peeps on here that might be able to offer a hand..

Right - I have joined www.mig-welding.co.uk and have been scouring for info all afternoon!

After reading posts about thin sheet metal work, specifically car bodywork, all seem to suggest that LOW settings (25 to 30 Amp) are the way to go, so as long as the Duty Cycle caters for that, then I should be good to go!

So, I am swaying towards the Clarke Pro 90
I can't see me needing to do anything beyond 3mm if sticking to body work, and the specs say this should cope  :dontknow:

clarke are the best welders to go for

is went for the 135te a little more expensive but it give me the option to do thicker stuff that i have done :) with my rollover spit and many other projects :)

my advise it to get a good auto helmet as these help alot :)
