That's a bummer, but at least an easy fix

Could be worth a new fuel filter  to try as you may have pulled some junk through, and check for air leaks in case you are running too lean

Good luck with the retest, hope your tester is fair and just check your tyre!

Yeah, he said he'd just check the tire, so that's a bonus. Fuel system is either new (filter/pump/injectors) or has been meticulously cleaned. Mixture needs checking properly which I'll get done by my friendly local garage. No air leaks have smoke tested it and propane tested it.

Run the engine in and keep it below 3000rpm and no more than 1/2 throttle for a few hundred miles, be patient as it will be worth it on the long run.

Definatley taking it steady on the engine, was only one point I went over 3k and it just felt odd. Like you say all needs beeding in. Last engine build I did was immediately followed by a 3 day trip up to Elgin and back to get 800 miles on it with an oil change at the half way point. Sadly, I don;t have the time to do 3 days away (mores the pity!). Will just have to do some steady drives round the Dales of an evening.

Such a shame about the tyre rotation. At least you know everything else is ok.
I’ve been following your thread for a while and it takes me back to when I good mine on the road, from the first drive out in years to taking it to the MOT station and feeling like you were about to take a major exam. I remember having the same feelings and I also remember the shock of the cost of the road tax.
I don’t have any suggestions on the running issue but possibly vacuum advance or other timing issue.
Got luck getting the retest, then the fun really begins. They’re great cars to drive and once you’ve done a few hundred miles to bed everything in and iron out the teething problems you’ll find how well it performs, even against a lot of modern cars.

Really didn't think I'd be nervous - I was quietly confident I'd done it all, but still… It is great to drive, cruises along nicely even on part throttle - that's the beauty a 1.8 engine in an 850Kg car!

I know that feeling J, but as already said such a minor fault to fail on (I'm surprised he didn't just let you away with it as an advisory, it doesn't seem like a dangerous fault).

Once you get her MOT'd, then at least you can start tinkering and adjusting things properly as you'll be able to drive it more than just around the street.  It's been a great build thread, keep the updates coming.

I was hoping he might, but my disappointed face wasn't cutting it!

Yeah, still a few bits left to do so there will be more updates. I'll have to change the title though!

Retest. Passed  :)Definately need to get the mixtre checked properly, and I've ordered a new coil (I think it may be on the original one) as that could be the cause of the hesitation. Won't hurt anyway, one less thing to fail on me!
Side trims to finish off next so I can get those on.

Congratulations on getting it MOTed, time to enjoy it now.

With regards to the mixture, you should have a bit of paper from the MOT with the mixture readings so you can see what it currently set at…

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Unless your MOT is done by Halfords (don't ask, it was free)! I have nothing.

Side trims - been working on these on and off in the background.
I really wanted to keep the original trims  - they weren't in really bad condition, and I didn't want to spend a chunk of cash on non-original replacements.
I stripped off the original coating - no easy task on the areas that hadn't seen any corrosion, and filled any surface defects with knifing putty and then a few coats of primer.

PXL_20210414_200725190.jpg

I'd posted a question about suitable coatings given that there needs to be an element of flexibility, and the originals have a texture to them. One of the suggestions from Briano1234 was PlastiDip. I did some digging on that and reckoned it would do the job. I decided I would apply it with a foam roller as that would give a similar texture to the the original finish. I'd need to roller the sides as well, so I have to come up with a cunning way to hold them whilst I did that. Cue some lengths of corner beading.

PXL_20210822_134544177.jpg

Trims then held in place with blu-tack

PXL_20210822_140126675.jpg

I applied thin coats with a roller, Plasti-dip starts to go off quite quickly and I wanted to get an even coating, so figured a lot of thin coats would be better. Was a rather time consuming process, but the texture looked good. In the end I'd used 3/4 of a 250ml tin, but there is an element of wastage using a roller. I gave a final coat with an aerosol front a back, and then applied some Plasti-dip 'glossifier' to give it a bit of sheen. I'm really pleased with the results!

There is the odd area where I had more build up than I wanted, but it's not overly obvious.

I'll post another pic once I get them on the car..

Thanks for reading!

Managed to knock up some radiator cards out of Milboard at the weekend. I'd found some pictures of the real thing on ebay ages ago, and managed to translate those to drawings. Made some cardboard templates to test fit and the moved on to the Milboard.

Rather pleased with them as it wasn't too difficult a job.

Took it down to my local garage to get the mixture checked - now sitting at 2%, I wasn't far off with the old Gunson I had!

I know  - I need to fit the centre caps for the wheels! Vinyl side stripes, wheel arch trims and the front spoiler still to fit….

As Sunday was such a decent day, I even took it down to the rugby club for our u9's match. Amazing how big parking spaces are when you have an old car!

Still tinkering with little things that aren't quite right. This time it was the boot lock that wouldn't lock. I was convinced it was the same key as everything else, but it wouldn't turn. Decided to take it apart and have a look. Removed the tumbler plates and tiny springs, cleaned out nearly 40 years of oil grease and muck, put it all back together and hey presto, I can now lock my boot!

Got the vinyl side stripes on finally, once the weather was good enough. Bit nervous about messing it up but I'm happy with how they've gone on.
PXL_20220528_172705282.jpg

Just picked up new wheels from the powder coaters. 14" Ronals.

Got the arch trims to do next and then it will look like a Gti again.

Great work again J.  It'll look so much better with the side stripes and arch trims (and if I'm honest I've never been a fan of black wheels), so loving the new Ronals.  I had the same rims on my very first Mk1 Driver.  Will see if I can dig out a pic.

Thanks Pete!
The wheels that are on were always going to be temporary until I found something more suitable. At the time I thought black and red would go well, but you are right, they don't! Maybe that is the wheel style though….

Great thread Paceman! I have also have all the photos of the restoration for my cabriolet, from start up until now, been at it over a year now. Might end up posting them all similar to the 020 gearbox thread I did. I might get around to doing a thread for my restoration too, feeling bit inspired by yours here. The nice shiny gearbox that I just did will be mated to engine this weekend and hopefully going back into the car. Pretty excited about that.

Where did you get the vinyl side stripes from? I think there is a cabriolet version out there for my car just can't seem to find it for sale anywhere.

Mk1 VW 1989 Cabriolet (Clipper Kit) in restoration
Mk1 VW 1986 Cabriolet Wolfsburg Triple White (in queue)
Ford Escort RS Turbo, Wide Body (in queue for restoration)

Sorry, only just seen your post Shubbs !
Thanks for the kind words. Finally got round to getting the new wheels on, and the arch trims, and the duckbill spoiler. Exterior 99% complete, just got the wheel centre caps to do. Will post more on that later..

Here's how she's looking now…

PXL_20220804_163321762.jpg

Got my stripes off ebay, I'll dig out a link. Didn't think the cabby ones were any different, but I don't own one so what do I know!
