bad news on the progress front, as i was waxoyling the last few bits yesterday, picked at a bit of surface rust behind the sill, in the floor pan, took off all the underseal, and managed to puit a screwdriver through it

Dint look like anything than a tiny flake of rust, but there was lots of rust that had been hiding under the mastik and the tar sound deadening….when i saw people takign off their sound deadening, i thought it was all abit much really, in the name of weight and what have you, but now i have learnt it is well worth doing this as yet more rust was lurkign the further down i investigated…..this is what i found

Which then after a bit of this….

Turned into this…

then had to cut a peice of steel to weld over the top, measuring 28cmx5cm, which goes to show the rust will hide from you so if you do strip the interior, go and take off the sound deadening too, a realy stiff wire cup, not wheel or brush, gets it off quite easily….

got a mate to weld it all in, and seam sealered the lot, lots of hammerite etc, so dont have to go near it for a while…

i WAS hoping for a bit more of a positive update this weekend but these things happen, noones fault though really as u HONESTLY cud not see it until u grinded it all out, ah well live and learn, for now im just giving the car a dam good coat of waxoyl and hammerite on beam wishbones etc, and gna take all the sealent off the floor pans

as much money as it cost the only way to make sure there is no rust is literally take the entire shell back to bare metal, even underneath, but 95% dont have the money of facilities nor time to do so, but i think taking sound deadening off is another step towards keepign it away…

Sadly some b******* took payment for my rear complete chrome bumper and naffed off with the money, got the front, but may be a while on getting hold of a rear, doubt ill ever see that money again!

what an absolute 'c' word, never do money transfers via bank, as they wont refund ur money and it isnt insured, go by paypal or not at all, wish i hadnt now, from a power seller too!!

ah well, enough of my ranting, enjoy the pics…

heres some shots i took on my phone, just before the light faded…sorry not enough chrome i know!

goes off to garage today to get last bits of work done on it, then tryign to get it an MOT!!! should be on the road in 2 weeks….

ill update soon with pics, hopefully with chrome bumpers on and an MOT!!

Looks lovely in orange, and the P-slots really suit the car too - usually I'm not a massive fan.

Good work :y:

that looks very nice ,i feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel .

good to see results of your hard work  :)

i stripped the underseal off the rear end of my golf by hand, found about 30 thumb nail patches of rust ,thats just from the petrol tank to rear panel -not the entire underneath .god knows how many more patches im going to find

keep at it

yeh well when the car is running adn the weather actually dries up im gna wire wheel all the underseal off the whole lot, and the fllorpans, drop the petrol tank etc, probably break somthing in the process....gna reverse up trailer ramps, then get half fone, then do the front, for not a goot liberal few tins of waxoyl will see me through these last few winter months hopefully...

well, car is off at the garage now, so dont have anything to work on, feels strange! bit of a boring update, but im at home in the week and have nothign else to do..

Have spent the last 3 days in and out of hospital being prodded with scalpels and pins cos of getting metal shards and rust in my eye from using a grinder,  yes i had taken precautions, i was wearing ear defenders and a safety mask, but managed to flick up under the mask into my eye…lesson is…goggles are much safer.

Whilst the car was away at the garage, i turned to a bit of chrome bumper treatment…bit of a good thing really, didn't fancy working in this sort of weather…

firstly waxoyled the inside, paid enough money for this and hard enoguh to find, so dont want it going anyway for a while

Then gave the bumper a good few coats of meguiars polish and wax, keep it shiny and protected..

Also took a picture of this cos it cracked me up, someone is obviously a keen believer in that gaffer will fix anything…indicator still worked too lol

cont have much left to say now, nearly everything has arrived for the car, just waiting on an MOT really, and hopefully enough money to run it once its roadworthy!

next update should be with some half decent pics

thanks for the interest

well, just went to see my car at the Garage, its all up and running finally, the big brake conversion is on, ended up customising myself a brake light switch off a scirrocco, as i wanted all 4 outlets to be dedicated to just the pipes. I will write up a howto on this soon.

Soo good to hear it all up and runnig, got everything finished, and then the MOT centre shut!

thanks for all the support so far, i never mentioned it.

Wish me luck for monday morning, im gna b there at 7.15 like an eager beaver! hopefully it will fly through as the mechanic cant find anything that it will fail on….

7:15 at the garage, nice early start! I'm sure it will be fine and fly through the MOT. Well done to date let us know how you get on on Monday.

good luck mate.  I really like what you have done with this car, especially regarding keeping the engine wee and driving round in an awesome car rather than driving round in a GTI that is knackered. 8)

woooooooooohoooo its FINALLY FINALLY road legal,

to say the least i am damn chuffed, cant quite put it into words…

mot failed first time round, twisted front brake hose on full lock, headlamps pointing too low, but these were easy to fix, and passed second time

Also failed catastrophically the first time on emissions, as it hasnt been on the road for nearly 5 years, it was a bit choked up to say the least i think…

emissions at the MOT centre on CO were a maximum of 4.5 to pass, i had 8.6! so i took it for a rag about for an hour, thrashing it to the redline in every gear….i felt it needed this to clean it out, also very angry about failing! this then brought it down to 3.8!! shows what a good thrash does eh?

Went back to garage, tweaked it up, passed second time, bloke was nice and ddnt charge me second time cos he sed he liked the car!!

as i was entering the mot centre, when using anythign electic i.e. lights or heaters, i heard a buzzing, clicking sound from fuse box, i ignored this and hoped it wud see me thru mot, i asked it nicely and rubbed the dashboard lol!

After the MOT, the second junction from centre, the light relay went haywire!!!! good little car got me thru, down to halfords and got a new one!

i am gna post some pictures up in a week or so, when its sunny and polished up, and all the inerior is finally reffitted and properly cleaned up!!

thanks ever so much for everyones support throughout this, and pictures will follow shortly, bit busy putting a hole in the ozone layer right now…

Check the back of your fusebox for water damage - it's quite common on the Mk1 for water to leak through the bulkhead and cause the contacts to rust.

VW still do the connector blocks if you need some to sort the problem
