Orange mk1, update 5/4 quarry pics
oooh that sounds enticing Tim, yes please. i got hold of an engine crane finally and have just gotta get hold of the tool to get the driveshafts off and i can start taking the engine out, ill clean it all up, think im gna have to pay an engineer to weld a new engine mount in, dont really want to mess that up…
for a start i wudnt know the first thing about welding and dont really want my engine bay to end up looking like a pigeon's tea party.
hopefully will tear myself away from nice weather and maybe get it out this weekend, dependant on tools more than anything.
thanks
Josh

ok Tim sounds cool,
so basically heres the situation with my car, i got the body restored at Timskis place (Project VW) when the car was originally done, and through that, did a bit of work for tim here and there, helping him out with the mk1s, as well as him regularly helping me with bits and bobs.
Because of this, i know Tim pretty well now, and he thought that my car was very unsual to come from someone my age, because of the obscene costs, the retro look instead of rudeboy, and basically the passion that went into it to produce a car that was nice to drive and look at.
Now that my car has black added to the colour scheme, Tim has offered me a complete in and out and engine bay respray, and then an oven bake to finish it off, as well as helping me out with numerous parts, because my funds are literally nil, and he wants to see this car back on the road, as he sees it as unfair for someone my age to spend that much money and sweat into a project only for it all to be gone in an instant.
Im going to be covering this rebuild pretty extensively hopefully, ive been doing a bit more camera work than on the last one so far, and just want to convey how much of a nice guy Tim is, to show off his work and generosity.
Hopefully it will show you all not just a nice car again at the end, but something that it bigger and better in every way, that has come from some hard graft, tim puts alot of effort and is very pedantic about his work, which is a good thing because it results in a fantastic finish. and ill add the car and attention it needs too.
My speech over, ill let the pics do the talking as always, got a fair bit done on it this weekend, all the floorpans are ready to be painted with the rest of the inside, just gotta clean up the bay with a bit or por 15 here and there, thoroughly degrease it and its ready to go orange again.
sum are a bit boring but ah well, its all progress in my eyes
Getting the crane ready:
Hauling it out:
The leftover mess:
After a bit of jizer and a pressure wash, just to clean the worst off for now, ill properly steam clean it soon.
and the comleted floorpans:
All comments appreciated
Thanks for the support

At this rate you'll have restored your car twice before i have finished mine for the first time. Keep up the good work.
First Golf, lots of work. I've started so I'll finish!

ok, basically been doing a little more stripping, seatbelts out etc, parcel shelfs, only a few tiny bits to go, like 15 minutes work and its a completely bare shell for spraying, just gotta cover steering rack and column when it goes to Timski for spraying.
Ive got to start sourcing some other parts whilst im waiting for it to be resprayed
Some questions:
im after an engine mount to do the GTI conversion ( will either mount fit i.e. the mount from the right hand side of the engine bay, or does it need to be off a gti? could i cut a left handed mount off a 1.1 for example) I need to sort this soon, i've been let down from the place where i was going to get one. any idea on costs off a breaker? crazyquiff if ur reading this?
also, a question on wiring looms, im going to put in a 1.6 mk2 driver engine, which loom/fuse box/ dash loom should i use as it will be carburetted, apparently only the 82-83GTIs share the same early mk2 fuse box.
do mk2 golf clocks fit a mk1 dash?, in which case i might just use the complete mk2 loom and fuse box
To summarise im after:
-Cabriolet wiring loom (because its a bigger carburetted engine, and was told its a straight swap
-Single lamp Grill (just the centre part, all the clips on mine are broken, anything cheap will be considered, i can always re-plastic paint it, beggars cant be choosers)
-Engine mount to do the GTI conversion.
sorry theres no pictures, nothing really exciting to update, next job will be steam cleaning the engine bay up, bare metalling the bulkhead and applying por 15, and thats about it, so pictures will follow when its all orange again most likely
again big shout to Tim for all his help with this project, very much appreciated.
Thanks
Josh

Just been reading around on the net again, and a Mk2 uses the same fuese box as a 82-83 mk1 gti, im assuming its only the gti, as its running an ECU, and possibly some other things that a Mk1 carb model isnt
The plan is, keep the wiring on the mk2 Engine, use the mk2 fuse box, and mate it to a mk1 golf rear light loom and a mk1 gti non mfa set of clocks and its loom, if anyone could suggest any reasons to why that would/wouldnt work, that would be great, im hoping that will solve my wiring headache.

i will have a mk1 big block chassis mount you can have if you want it, but it wont be coming out for about a month, as im removing my 16v (which is for sale!!)and putting a 20v turbo into my project dylan (see link) so the original shell is being stripped 4 parts and scrapped  but your more than welcome to the mount.

ok, finally got round to doing some work on the mk1, basically, cutting out some sill rust and getting the engine bay finally cleaned, removing some seam sealer, applying por 15 and primer. still got wishbone area and a bit on the front crossmember to primer up, then new mount to weld in and im good to go, start painting it up and dropping the new 1.8 in!
Let the pics do the talking:
seam sealer removed:
rust cut out:
the gash thats left:
por 15's and primered up (yes i know its on the top mounts and all the rubber boots but theyre all beign replaced anyway):
how she stands now:
More updates soon

engine bay is finally painted, did it with satin hammertie to to keep the grease from showing up too bad, and to eliminate any rust that hadnt been treated with the por 15.
ive still got to cut the old left engine mount off and get another one welded on but this is how it stands for now, also a few areas im gna rub down and go over again cos of runs
hopefully something will go back onto it soon

ok, so finally got round to doing the inside, basically just to coat over the primer and make it all nice and fresh in there, again finish isnt that great, but the bits you will be able to see are already sprayed i.e. boot area, or are going to be sprayed like the pillars inside.
took apart another 1.1 mk1 for parts, took the loom, dash, heater matrix etc etc,
also almost took engine out of the mk2 today, got the front mount off, all cables and wires and pipes, exhaust, gear linkage etc disconnected so its just the driveshafts and 2 engine mounts to come off and i can whip it out. hopefully will get it out one evening this week
got a car cover for it so it can be protected from the elements until it is finished….
cant think of anything else to say so ill leave it there, bit more progress soon.
Any comments appreciated
