MK1 Golf Motronic ECU Wiring

No fuel could be the mixture adjustment. I've just had something very similar after I completly stripped the metering head and the CIS airbox.
You need to use a jumper wire so that the fuel pump runs continuously. It's covered in the Haynes or other posts on here. Once you've got the pump running, carefully remove one of the injector lines off the metering head - doesn't matter which - although you could check them all. With just the pump running you shouldn't get any fuel coming out. Adjust the mixture, turning clockwise (slowly) until you just start to get fuel coming through, then back it off a 1/4 turn.
Remove the jumper and put the relay back in and try and start it. If it still doesn't start, give the mixture screw an 1/8th turn clockwise. You will definately need to get the mixture checked by a garage to get it properly right, but that should get you stared.
If not, then you can repeat the process above, but this time very slowly lidt the metering plate up - at this point, you should definately get fuel. If you don't then the metering head plunger could well be at fault.
You can buy rebuild kits for them.

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here

to jump fuel pump the easiest way is swap a 17/18/100 relay into the fuel relay socket then you can switch pump on and off with ignition. pull the black wires off the coil to prevent any chance of a spark

I'm following your post and help gents as when I tried to get mine running years ago (KR) I couldn't get fuel to the injectors although I could get it to the metering unit

Cheers

Ok so I had fuel at the metering head but none seemed to be entering the engine as all 4 spark plugs were dry.

Upon cranking the engine the pump was pushing fuel to the metering head no problem however when loosening off each injector pipe from the metering head (attempting to try and bleed the air from the system as you mention paceman) I had fuel intermittently at each pipe.
Mainly though, there was no fuel going to nr. 1 cylinder from the metering head whatsoever.

Even when we put a power probe on the cold start to continually feed the engine this alone wasn't enough to start it.

Off the back of this I've got a few parts  currently on the way to me including:
New starter motor (3rd time lucky!)
Metering head
4 nr. New Bosch injectors

Also going to fit some new stainless injector hoses that I'd bought ages ago and forgotten about!

I'm wondering whether I should also look to replace the fuel pressure regulator / accumulator !? Current one looks horrible but this seems to be another awkward part to get hold of…….

I've also bought a rebuild kit to rework the metering head I take off the car to keep as a spare as parts are becoming scarce

Once all the parts have arrived I'm going to have another stab at it 👍

you need to lift the metering head air flap before any fuel will make it to the injectors

Ah right ok, checked it was clean and free which it is but didn't lift it while trying to start her. I'll try that before swopping all the metering head over just in case……

I know exactly what you mean and I'm in a similar situation in terms of timescales for owning mine and not actually using it!
Life and circumstances have a habit of getting in the way sometimes 🙄

Stick with it chaps. I drove mine for four years, then decide to sort some issues out. That was 23 years ago - but I'm so close to the end. Soooo close!

I'm up to 17 years ownership now so not too far behind you!

So, this happened Sunday………

VID-20210808-WA0000_001.mp4

Still some tweaks and issues to iron out (the airflow meter plate being the main source of poor starting / running without having it propped slightly open with a screwdriver!) but……..she is alive!!

Thanks to everyone on here for all your help and guidance, it is very much appreciated!! 👍👍
