DX to ABF conversion wiring

Thanks rubjonny.
I'll check out the scrappy..

Ok, so I've got the engine sitting in the bay, albeit on the floor. Was going to mate the box and mount it, but have some technical issues with my gearbox mount & clutch cable.

So back to the wiring as I'm about to start thinning out my mk1 loom.

How do I handle the immobiliser box? I have the key, antenna, and black box(about fag packed size). I see it has a 6pin port, but I have no connector for it. maybe scrappy trip.. How do I link this to the loom?

As an aside. Is it necessary to have the engine out to fit the accel, clutch and speedo cables, or just a bit easier?
Mk1/2 1.3 for clutch and speedo cables?
What about accel though? Std mk3?

As for the drive shafts. New CV joints arrive Monday. Do I just 'move' the shoulder back that the dished washer sits on??

Many thanks

yeah find a mk3 in scrappy with immobiliser, follow key reader to the box then strip all the wiring to it without cutting anything. if you dont have a vagcom port take that too its next to the ashtray. trace the wires in the loom remove the grey and yellow wires back to the diagnostics jumper without cutting, trace red and brown to where they splice into the dash loom and snip. take diagnostics jumper block as well.

red and brown on port to ciggy lighter, black wire on immob box to ignition live brown to earth. plug immob box grey wires to ecu diagnostic wire and jumper block, job done!

all the engine cables can be fitted easily enough with accelerator use mk2 gti, clutch and speedo depends on the gearbox. if mk1/2 020 use mk1 1.5-1.8 cables, if 02a use mk1 1.3 cables

yeah if putting 100mm cv to 90 shafts, grind the inner lip back the difference between 90mm and 100mm cv thickness, so the thicker 100mm cv sits with the outer face where the old 90mm one used to sit :)

Thanks rubjonny, i'll get to the scrappy.

Where do you get a (reasonably priced) mk1 1.3 speedo cable from?

I understand the mod that needs doing to my shafts. What confussed me is that they are both 'slightly' different where the dished washer sits, but now I have the Cv jounts in my hands it is all clear. The Mk3 CV's are slightly asymetric. Is there a prefferd orrientation?

Many thanks

ebay, motor factors, vwheritage etc :)

ELsawin says 'Chamfer on the inner circumference of ball hub (splines) must face the contact shoulder of the drive shaft'

is that any help?

Sounds reasonable. I'll check it out tomorrow when I have the bits in front of me. Left them all in work  O_o

Thanks

the numbers are usually on the back of the plug under the boot? if it helps:

1 - ocil pin 1
2 - battery -ve
4 - coil pin 15
6 - mk3 dizzy wire to splice

you cant just fit 100mm cv ro 90mm shafts as they're different lengths plus the 100mm cv is thicker. if you can get the shafts into a lathe and machine the inner lip enough to get the cv on you're onto a winner :)

Sorted out a load of mechanical issues like brakes, drive shafts, ecu mounting, etc, so back on with the wiring. Needed to refresh my memory with a good read of this thread…

Was looking at my Mk1 loom last night ready to start chopping and splicing tonight. I take it that the TCI pin 3 and 5 are the remaining pins to the old dizzy and no longer needed?
Many thanks

Oh, and clutch and accel cable bought and fitted - work great.
Speedo i'm still a little confused on for my 02a. I have read that the mk1 1.3 speedo cable does not fit the GTi clocks. Is this right?
However, the mk2 1.3 does have the right mk1 gti clock fitting, and the gearbox end?
Could you clarify for me please?
Many thanks

yes 3, 5 and 7 are not used.

you need a late 1.3 speedo cable, i.e. from a 1.3 with same type of clocks as yours :) you have 2 cable fitments on the mk1 early threaded and late plastic push fit. makes no odds on the engine, its down to the age of the car.

box end 1.3 all same as 02a/j

Thanks rubjonny. So if i order a mk2 1.3 speedo cable i've got the best chance of it fitting?
Both looms stripped now ready to join, and ecu mounted

you want a mk1 golf cable ideally, the mk2 ones will fit either end but may not be right in between i.e. length and bulkhead grommets.  late mk1 1.3 cables are same fitment either end as mk2 golf, i.e. threaded to gearbox and push fit to clocks

Thanks rubjonny. Mk1 1.3 speedo cables are like rocking horse poop…(at an affordable price).
I'll find one.
Thanks

ah ok fair enough, if you have an old mk1 cable hanging about you could swap the seals over maybe if different?

looking at it the LHD mk1 uses a mk2 speedo cable anyway so it cant be that far off? main trouble is RHD mk2 is 1200mm, RHD MK1 is 1600mm! not sure why the extra length, I guess its down to the routing thru the bulkhead?

classic parts are remaking mk1 1.3 speedo cable:

also they're making the mk2 cable which is cheaper, part number 192957803:

Yes, not cheap  :'(  I'll have to stop being cheap. Somebody told me this was a cost effective engine swap LOL

I'm just starting to mate the looms together, but I have a grey and white cable with a single brown plug that goes to pin 43 ECU, and a blue/white cable with blue plug the goes to ECU pin 35. Where do these go in the mk1?
Thanks
Huw

grey/white is diagnostics, goes to the vagcom port or the immobiliser box if its an immobilised ecu. the blue/white is speedo signal to ecu, this probably isnt needed but i run the wire anyway just in case. i certainly noticed no difference aftyer hooking it up! gores to the clocks but you probably wont have the wire for it

Thanks rubjonny
I'll lose the blue one then.
So the grey/white goes to the box that the antenna for the key tag links to, but what links out to the vagcom port? I'm off to the scrappy tomorrow, so it should all become clear then.
Thanks

there is a wire from the immobiliser box to a jumper block above the fusebox, then the wiring from the port also plugs into it. live and earth from port splice into the mk3 ciggy lighter wiring in the dash loom somewhere, ideally remove the diagnostic wires back to jumper block without cutting and trace the live and earth to the splice points and snip

Here are the looms starting to be joined.

Getting there

The wires to the engine connector are way too long though. Do you just fold it and tape it?
There are too many online users to list.
