DX to ABF conversion wiring

The sensor at the top is the one I'm on about. The one below is also 2 pin and this is the one that is wired to the small engine loom.

I believe the connector top right is the one for the upper water sensor in the top pic, and the 2 green wires are for this connector..

What do you think?
Cheers

2 pin in coolant flange is aircon, bin along wit the green/grey wired 2 pin :)

you can buy non-ac flange:

Ahh, that explains it. Thanks, and i'll get one of those flanges (love that word) on order.

This is what I have so far

Engine connector to left and ecu connector to top. Loop by news paper is TCI, diagnostic and ecu earth. Red loop with yellow connector is injectors (Where does this go?) At the bottom is starter, alt and reverse separated out.

Lambda and inlet air temp sensor. Does inlet air temp go in the air box? I understand I need to use a cone inlet on a mk1. What is the sensor in the tube to the throttle body?

Close up of fuse box end. Seems a lot. I assume blue is VSS for ecu. What does this mean?
Have I got too many wires left?

Thanks

yes you have got it right down to the minimum there, you are left with the sensor and ecu feeds. this should help you break it down:
http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?219775

injectors you feed from a spade to E/14, or if you like ignition/ecu live. its all covered in this thread in quite a lot of detail ;)

Ok, I have been having a look through the Engine FAQ which is an awesome amount of detail.

The 3 plugs I have on the end of my ABF loom are F, G1 & G2
These are the wires I have left after my loom trim.

F
 5 - red - ECU pin 7 (16v) (Connect to C18?)
 8 - brn/blk - lambda probe pin 2 (although this is a brown wire on mine…)

 G1
 3 - yel/blu - ECU pin 6 (Don't think I need this as I have no.2 relay in position 2 on CE1 fusebox)
 4 - blk - ECU pin 38 (pre-96 6cyl), vehicle speed sensor pin 1, ignition coil pin 3 (4cyl, pre-96 6cyl), ignition coil pin 5 (post-96 6cyl) (ign live?)
 5 - brn/wht - coolant level sender pin 1, earth to engine
 7 - blk/wht - ECU pin 9 (4cyl) (this is black/red) ECU relay?
 8 - red/wht - lambda probe pin 2 (post-96) (connect to E14?)
 9 - yel/blk - ECU pin 5 (I have nothing in this position)
 10-blk/yel - ECU pin 23 (4cyl) (ECU relay?)
 11- wht/blu - Vehicle speed sensor pin 2
 12- grn/wht - ECU pin 22 (16v) (staying with mk1 dash so bin??)

 G2
 1 - grn/blk - oil temp sensor
 3 - yel/red - coolant temp sensor (4cyl)
 4 - blk/pur - ECU pin 38 (4cyl), ECU pin 23 (post-96 6cyl), carbon canister valve pin 2, ISV (4cyl), breather heater (this is black/white and branches out into 3 wires) Ignition live? D7?
10- yel - high oil pressure warning switch
11- blu/blk - low oil pressure warning switch

What is the ECU relay I need? I have a spare holder that links to the engine connector on the mk1, but it is not used so i'll just cut the wires and join the ecu links in.

I have the mk1 loom out of the car now and I'm about to start modifying it. Just keen to know if there are any wires above I can bin, then where to splice the rest to
Thanks

F/5 either C/18 or just splice it into main starter live wire, up to you

G1/3 put to D/13 ideally, much easier to get 67/80/167 fuel relays than it is to get decent kjet fuel relays

g1/4 is ignition live for the coil yes, use your old coil live as part of the mk1/2 coil conversion

G2/4 yes d/2 or d/7

for ecu relay you can use a 53 relay and ignore g1/7, or get a 30 relay and add g1/7 to it. I use the 30 relay becasue, may as well ;)the only trouble is the g1/7 pin on relay is the smaller 2.8mm type spade but they are still easy to get just bear it in mind. the smaller spades are used in cvasrious places on mk1/2/3 looms, for example you could pinch one from the mk3 brake fluid level switch ;) if you want new terminals:
http://polevolt.co.uk/acatalog/Uninsulated_Terminals_and_covers.html

anyway wire your relay as so:

30 - live spade
31/85 - earth
86 - d/2 or d/7
87 - g1/10
86a - g1/7

Thanks rubjonny.
I'm hoping this will all make more sense when i start pulling the mk1 loom apart. Start tomorrow night  :o
Are there any connections in my last post that i really don't need?

wont need the gearbox speed sensor obviously, you may or may not need g1/5 it depends if your mk1 has an mfa cluster or not. if it does put a female spade on it and plug it into the matching dash wire. if not no need. oil temp again if you have the mfa you need, put female spade on and plug to dash wire. if not bin. Though watch out as on early looms the oil temp wire goes to fusebox and its one of the pressure switches on a spade!

oh and oil pressure switch wires are reversed on a mk1, so you'll need to swap the spades over on the abf pressure switches if you match the colours to the mk1 fusebox

you'll see whats what when you unplug

Right, been checking out my Mk1 DX loom and I just want to check that I am not about to do something stupid and cut something i'll need.
I have the following connectors:-

Inlet manifold - bin
5th Injector - bin
Windscreen wiper - keep (already a mk2 unit)
Unknown (2 pin D. Cable tied up and not connected) - bin (see pic)

Coil +ve - keep
Coil -ve - keep
Starter - use ABF connector
Rocker cover earth - keep
Oil pressure head (yellow) - join to ABF G2/11 blue/black
Vac advance switch - bin
G/box reverse switch - use ABF connector
Oil pressure filter (blue/black) - join to ABF G2/10 yellow
WUR - bin
Oil temp (green/black) - join to ABF G2/1
Water temp (yellow/red) - join to ABF G2/3
Water outlet (front of head) - bin

TCI loom has 6 wires
Black - coil +ve
Green - coil -ve
Battery earth
Dizzy - brown/white, red/black, green/white Which one goes to pin 6?

I do have mfa, but it doesn't work well. Once I get the DX loom thinned out i'll have a clearer picture of how to mate the 2 looms together.

Thanks
Huw

pictured plug if red/blue and brown thats coolant level sensor, it will only work if the matching relay socket and 42/43 relay is fitted

brown/white rocker cover earth bin, instead use mk3 wire but put spade on it and housing from mk1 wire

could join the mk3 oil pressure wires to the matching colour mk1, just switch the pressure switch wires over on the engine itself to save confusion ;)

for oil temp bin the mk1 wire and crimp a spade and swap housing from mk1 wire (or if its an oil pressure wire on a spade and oil temp to fusebox plug same advice but substitute spade to correct colour abf wire)

for the tci simply pull the rubber boot off the plug, sockets are numbered ;)

I've got the no 30 relay on order, but struggling to find a suitable mount for the top of the fusebox. The spare mount I have in a 4 pin (coolant relay mount) not 5 pin like relay 30 needs. Any ideas where to get one? I could just tape it up, but i'd rather do it properly.

Also, my TCI connector doesn't seem to have numbers on. Had the boot off and looked closely, but can't see any. It has 7 connectors. Is no 1 or no 7 open?

Thanks

Or are the TCI numbers on the TCI itself?? Didn't look there…

And can I get 100mm CV joints for my 90mm drive shafts? If so, which ones fit??
I believe my 90mm shafts are a tad too long, but I can get them shortened - just need to know by how much.

100mm Cabby shafts seem to be like 'hens teeth' and very expensive…..
Thanks

the numbers are usually on the back of the plug under the boot? if it helps:

1 - ocil pin 1
2 - battery -ve
4 - coil pin 15
6 - mk3 dizzy wire to splice

you cant just fit 100mm cv ro 90mm shafts as they're different lengths plus the 100mm cv is thicker. if you can get the shafts into a lathe and machine the inner lip enough to get the cv on you're onto a winner :)

Good stuff, I can get the shafts in a lathe, so do I just need any 100mm cv's off a mk3?
Thanks

Post

mk1, mk2 and mk3 100mm inner cvs all same, tho you'll probably need a mk1 boot kit?

for relay holder look at mk3 in scrappy the leccy window relays should have all the pins you need and will clip nice to fusebox
