Cheers ben cab for all the infomation so far mate.

Seems i am also going the 1.8t route now after having alot of fun with my previous ABF.

Few things to add on here if i think they are correct.

AEB - Larger Ported head - Mahle Pistons - but not totally Forged - Ko3 turbo - Fits straight into your mk1
AGU - Larger Ported head - Mahle Pistons - but not totally Forged - ko3 turbo - Requires Drivers Side Engine Mount.

020 Gearbox - Bolts Straight on with 90mm driveshafts
02A and 02J - Requires engine mount and 100mm driveshafts

16v Cambelt Tensioner Required
Powersteering Pump removed - new/smaller timing belt fitted to accommadate.

Hydraulic Cable Clutch?
Mk2 Golf 1.3gx throttle cable

I have also read on the forums that the exisiting ko3 turbo sits on the servo bar is it? How did you guys get around this problem, did you fit a different exhaust manifold or upgraded turbo?

Post

turbo doesnt sit on the servo bar at all no where near the wastegate however does touch the gearchange and needs bending down so it misses

I actually read about this last in Jamie's 20vT thread and i think you both mentioned the hammer technique  8)

I have a few more qq's  :)

1. Can i still use the original AEB exhaust manifold?
2. The Qpeng downpipe is the answer to the k03, k03s and k04 turbos only?
3. Where can i source an engine mount if using an 02J or 02A?

This is really part of q3, but if upgrading the tranny i have read that some owners upgrade to clutch cable shift method.

Has anyone tried this, was it it easy enough to do?

Many thanks
Gary

3,caddy forum ,gwerks, vagabonds on here

if using a 02a gearbox you can fit the seat clutch kit to make it work without hydrualics

1.8T Conversion into a Mk1 Golf
Mounts
So with the engine and gearbox together and an empty bay you need to sort the engine mounts out to get the engine in. On the gearbox side of the engine you can use the standard Gti mounts but it is worth fitting a rear poly mount to give the engine a bit more stability.
The Cambelt end mount will need to be a modified one which are available from places like the caddy forum, gwerks, crazyquiffs ect along with this mount you will need a 16v cambelt tensioner to replace the 1.8T item as it fouls the mount youmay need to get the stud with the tensioner or a longer bolt cam be used before fitting the tensioner you need to space it 8mm away from the head soothe belt runs true !…….. Always worth replacing the waterpump and cambelt whilst your at it as things get a little tight once the engine is in

Does the cambelt cover need modifying to accept the cambelt mount as mine won't go on now, I never remember reading anything about this though and the mount does look very tight but I assume this is how it is meant to be not spaced or anything?!

Sorry forgot to add two more things…

One the 16V tensioner is not needed, buy yourself some M18 shakeproof stainless washers and save some pennies as the 20Vt tensioner is fine it just needs fixing in place, a couple of people have done this and it saves a lot of hassle! Then the belt will run true not off to one side. It is less of a bodge than 8mm worth of washers, you can also leave the aluminium bit on the back to tension the belt by hand and as you tighten the bolt it will tension the cambelt further as the shake proof washer bites into the tensioner.

and number two! MODS THIS SHOULD BE A STICKY!!!

Sticky!!!!!

Im currently 75% of the way through this conversion and now im a bit stuck.
How does the front mount go on? I cant see anywhere for it to go on the block and it looks bloody tight anyway!
Another thing is the Qpeng downpipe looks like it will hit the inner cv, ive tried bending it but theres no give at all. Should i try heating it up and bending it or send it back and get another one?
Oh and the inlet manifold is too high and wont allow me to close the bonnet. Anyone else had this?

Joe the cambelt cover does need a bit of cutting.

Hi matey.

I havent gotten this far yet. I do believe the reason your front mount doesn't line up and the reason your inlet manifold is quite high, is down to the rear mount fixing. The one that attaches to the gearbox.

As for the qpeng downpipe, you may find once your engine is in the right position your downpipe should miss the CV

Hi Joe, Can you attach any pictures of the setup you have. I have found the 16v tensioner doesnt fit too well, and would prefere to stick with the factory one if its possible

The inlet manifold is still too high even without the rear mount, the problem is I cant see where the front mount attaches to the block.
The downpipe is only affected by what it's attached to, i.e. the turbo. Repositioning the engine will have no effect on it.

…but the turbo is attached to the exhaust manifold, which is attached to the engine?

If its anything like the stock front mount, it uses the same bolts as the gearbox and starter motor, these items would need to be fitted to 'mock up' the engine mounting position.
