intermittent rough running petrol caddy

Bear with me, as a bit of a mechanical noob…

1.6 petrol caddy, running webber carbs. For the past few months it's suffered from intermittent poor running - kinda a gentle misfire/stutter, where it feels like it wants to stall.

It's fine when cool, and when idling (though it idles a touch fast at around 1100rpm), but once warm, every few minutes driving, for 10-20 seconds, it judders and jerks, and feels as described above.

It's had a new coil a year ago (realistically very few miles in that time), and recently an auto electrician gave it the ok, it's had new HT leads, new spark plugs and i've cleaned up the contacts inside the dizzy tonight.

Every time I do something it gets a little better. Tonight, i though I had it sorted, but after 15 mins or so I it came back - not as severe as before, but still there.

It doesn't conk out, but it means i've no confidence in driving it anywhere - been on the back of an AA van too many times now :dry:Any ideas what the root cause might be, and what I might be able to do?

I've been saying I'm gonna sell it for years now, but love it too much - but this is driving me round the bend!

Can you replicate the poor running?

How much money are you willing to spend to properly diagnose it?

How old is the carb. My series 2a Land Rover was like this. Had the carb rebuilt with all new parts (was cheaper than buying a new one) and it’s been fine since

Carb was rebuilt/serviced a few hundred miles ago - it's actually a couple of years (for various reasons), but it's not gone far.

Not sure how I could replicate it? it just kinda happens when I'm driving! Can't make it happen when idling unfortunately, or revving when not under load. As for money, I've spent a fair bit on it already and really should flog it - I'm not sure what else there is to replace in the coil/lead/dizzy/spark system!

Of course, I am guessing, but it could be a fuel delivery issue if it occurs only when driving - there might be dirt/rust in the fuel tank, which part-blocks the pickup and causes a temporary issue. But I'm guessing.

You could fit a wideband lambda but that would cost money, to help diagnose the issue properly (without guessing).

yeah, i've thought about that - the filter is super clean (which I guess might indicate it's ok back in there?) and I think my local garage  did check the tank before, and said it was ok…

what i could do with is a specialist garage (or enthusiast!) near bristol who'd have a look and see, but don't know of any!

My mates would say what I really need to do is sell it…  :|

Garage, specialist garage or enthusiast is still guessing though, which is partly the point I was making. Its only by measuring things that you can properly determine the cause. You can take a guess, based on others, but its still a guess.

TBH I'd never heard of a wideband lambda!

If it's fine when cold but not when hot sounds like it could be too much fuel, what colour are your plugs?

Have you checked that the choke fully disengages?

What webbers do you have? Did you have this problem before they were rebuilt? Were the jets changed?

Fuel - ok cool - would that be linked to the 1100rpm idle? IIRC it should be around 900? The plugs were pretty coked up, but even with fresh ones in, first time out there was some stuttering.

I'll check on the choke, thanks.

Not sure what webber it is - my general knowledge is pretty limited! but nah, no problem straight away - the issue just appeared randomly. jets were changed, though, during its rebuild.
