Can I drive into the UK in a MK1 Golf or would it be "too old" for safety regulation?

I was planning on getting a Mk1 Golf from Europe (it would be insured in EU) and taking the ferry from somewhere in France to Dover in the UK however I have heard that I might not be let into the country because the car would be "too old", is this true? Does it work the other way round too (UK to France)? I was planning on doing a bit of a road trip. Any help about this topic will help :)

Plenty of people from the EU bring there old cars into the UK, i am not sure about the registration/insurance etc if you buy the car and then want to drive it into the uk. If it was an issue i am sure you could trailer it to your home address and then get it MOT'd/registration and insurance sorted after you get home.
I am sure there are others here who know more or ring customs and excise and they will give you right information.

If you're just talking about a visit, I don't think you should have any problems. I took my mk1 to France and they let me back in. I've seen older foreign-registered cars in the UK.

If you're talking about importing it, I doubt it'd be a problem but I have no idea what you'd have to do.

Older mk1 escorts are always being imported from Europe, so don't see a problem, although on the return journey I think you wont be able to visit paris,  (sure I read something about old cars being banned)
