The decision not to include the Caddy and Jetta was already taken here by Drew, the former Chairman for the aforementioned reasons.
http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1990&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=caddy+club
In fact there is more rationale to include the Jetta than the Caddy (more common parts with Golf, same parts catalogue, built in same factory). I see plenty of Caddys at shows, we are here to preserve the classic car that is the Mk1 Golf. IMO the Caddy will never become a classic car (I have never seen one listed in a classic car mag either). Caddy/Jetta owners can already get technical help on common areas via the forum's relevant section. As places on the stand are often now fully booked it can mean saying no to a Golf owner in place of a Caddy. As I have already stated in special cases we can allow Caddys onto the stand and the decision will be made on a case by case basis.

I pointed to my MK1 owners club sticker and showed him a 2 finger salute
Only joking, I don't have a club sticker….
I don't want to openly declare that I'm a caddy biggot

Agreed.
I think were going to have a long thread about this.
aha.
But i have to say im finding it farly annoying that people disagree.
It is a classic car mate, if you dont respect the caddy then you obviously dont respect your mk1 when you see it parked facing you…
But you obv do, your on a mk1 golf forum so you either think they look crap and drive it anyway and only like it cause its 25 years old or you actually appreciate the build and shape etc of the mk1 golf, caddy or cabby.
I personally think if a cabby can be on the stand, so can a caddy.
3. They are produced in another factory to any making Golfs
Nore are cabbys.
4. They are not in the Golf parts catalogue
"Ohh no, nore are they in the gsf magazine wow"
Who cares, its basically a mk1 golf.
Do you include the later american model of the mk1 golf, with the squear light front etc, if you do then you should really include the caddy and the cabby….
Cabbys should be stopped then.
And jettas shouldnt but they do have a different front as standard tbh, so more reason to say no.
And all the parts are basically the same, as vw didnt put them together anyway, why should we care 25 years later?

i havent seen cabbys in retro car mags either?
Cabrios have been in quite a few classic car mags, the Dec 2000 edition of Classic & Sports Car for example. I have seen quite a few buying guide articles more recently too, as they are often recommended as a relatively cheap convertible.

Can you point me to any reference that describes a Caddy as a classic car?
I respect many classic cars, does that mean we should include them too?
As stated, it is the sum of the reasons they are not included, but mainly because they are not a Golf and there is already a Caddy forum.
Cabbys have a badge on the back saying "Golf". VW call a cabrio a Golf Cabriolet and a caddy a Caddy. It is quite simple really.
We have never really made any decisions on the Rabbit. The closest we came was a poll that voted to include Citi Golfs here

Certainly in UK there are not many Rabbits around anyway.

This said I don't think they should be on the Mk1 Golf stand but should be encouraged to come to meets.
Mk1 Cabriolets are Mk1 Golfs - saying otherwise is just argument for the sake of arguement.
Mk1 Caddys and Mk1 Jettas are equally classic cars, and as mentioned before there are some awesome examples at shows.
So I say yes, they should be welcome on the forum and at the meets.

You have enough mk1 Golfs to know that this forum is for Rabbits.
All it is, is a name were in America they called it a Rabbit, here they chose Golf.
So lets jsut say, their the same mate, if all your classing it on is the name, not the fact that the squear light ones are later models.
Also, they wernt made in the same place either so… does that make them not mk1s too.
So for the fact you dont even know Rabbit is the term for Golf in different countrys i dont agree with you about the caddy.
And i also dont care less that you own alot more than i do, youve obv got richer parents, better job, greyer hair.

Foreststu hit the nail on the head I reckon.
Just to add though, the caddy (rear axle assembly) is covered in my Mk1 Golf Haynes manual. There's no coverage of Cabby's though. :?

At the end of the day it's been decided that caddys aren't true mk1's. We could go on for pages about the ins and outs by the powers that be (rightly or wrongly depending on your view point) have made a decision and at the end of the day it's their club and they can say who can play with them.
Now as a caddy driver i've never had any comments that made me feel left out, but then I'm not all that bothered. If I ever felt unwelcome then I'd just go somewhere else.
At the end of the day it's a useful forum for mk1 parts and info and that's exactly how I treat it, nothing more, nothing less. So what if I'm not the first choice for a stand.

Sorry you are wrong - a US built Rabbit is a very different vehicle to a German built Golf. I know, I own one. All the parts were sourced locally and the car was designed for different market requirements, legislation and production methods. Where do I start - the electrical architecture is completely different, the engines are with EGR and low compression, the complete interior is different (dash, seats, instrument cluster, headlining, door panel), the body shell and front wings are different, all interior and exterior lighting is different, the spring rates are different…

Rabbits were made from 1975 to 1978 at Wolfsburg

Your absurd assumptions about my personal life has nothing to do with either this thread or you. Or is that what you need to resort to? Kids :roll:fulltiimejunglist said

Cheeky boy.
Perosnally I see things in black and white. This is and I quote as it says above
The VW Golf Mk1 Owners' Club
Exclusively for the Mk1 Golf
MK1 Golf
Not Caddy, Jetta Polo, Renault 5, camper van, mars rover, beagle 2
it may have some buts that are the same or smililar but its not a golf. its a pick up truck, i'd have one just thing of all the garden trimmings you could fit in the back for a trip to the recycling centre!

caddy's are pants. in my eyes, they are not much different to a floppy. can't see any reason for them not to be welcome though.
I could see you in this though. More to the point I could see myself in this - its fab!
I thought it was great too! Until I asked about its top speed and acceleration……. only joking Sean1151….
