Golf GLS 5dr 1977 automatic in L62A Bali Green for sale.

Read this long post and tell me honestly what you think.

Morning everyone well I've just finished the 4th season of Guess the Asking Price and now I have a new challenge for you.

I will tell you the Asking Price and you can give me your honest opinions on the car and what you really think of it.
I've looked at simply 1,000's of MK1's for sale over the last 8 years. It's a hobby and a passion of mine as well as owning a very nice Cabrio as many of you know.

But this car has come up for sale about a 2 hour drive from me in Hungary and I'm seriously thinking about buying it.

It's a full restoration at nut and bolt level done by as I understand one of the best restoration companies in Hungary. As I understand it the Hungarians are well respected in the restoration business.

Now its asking price is €14,000 which is appropriately £12,000.

Below is the technical information followed by the 22 photos in the order I found them on the advert but it's not a logical way to list them.

So now you know about as much about the car as I do so tell me honestly what you think!

My idea is to use for promotions, events, films and maybe high end Wedding. To offer it as a kind of marketing tool, you can make fashion statements with it. There are so many possibilities for its use as long as it stays looking this good.

I would have to purchase an appropriate car trailer but my Golf Mk6 has enough power and I have a built in factory tow bar so I save a little.

I think that if I sell the concept right it could possibly pay for itself in 5 years. Well that would be my target anyway.

My wife is not against the idea although I would have to sell fairly fast my beloved Mk1 Cabrio but I get to transfer over the registration number 'GF MK1' which will look pretty good on it!

Lastly not that your in any way interested but I've just been forced to retire at 54 due to my health as I have a lung disorder. I've worked for the US Embassy here in Vienna Austria for the past 18 years and worked for 3 Presidents and I've met more Secretaries of State that I can count on 2 hands. I'd planned to work till 65 and retire gracefully then so this is a big shock to the system.

My family are worried that I'll just become a couch potato in front of the TV well if I get this car I simply won't have the time or energy to that.

So enough of the old car salesman from me, please take a long and considerate look at the car and tell me honestly what you think. Don't hold back because I did do this job as a professional for VW/Audi for just over 5 years.

Many thanks for taking the time.

Hi Guys and girls well here's your chance to hit me in the soft sqwiggy bits for how I've treated you all over the years of GAP, plus a few extra names. But seriously look at this whole post and tell me please what you think because I really do appreciate your opinions and feedback back and for once I'm at the sharp end! ;)

It is a great deal of money for someone like me so I'm not playing I'm definitely dead serious. Lastly if you've seen one better can you point me in its direction because I'd like to have something to compare it with if there is one outside of a museum.

All of this entire post has been done quickly and all from my Smartphone so sorry if I've screwed up somewhere! ;)

Well it's a nice car.  But the interior bits as they are were not avail in 77, those bits are from a 81 LS version over hear as I had one.  Those chrome/carpet trim also included a wood grained dash….

Gee they want more for that car than I paid new for my 81 Rabbit diesel LS.

Nice ride…

Lower price that I would of guessed but not my thing.

Worth the money in the medium to long term and 12k to keep you active and happy for 5-10 years is a bargain.

The only bit I can see that is a bit of a downer is that it's automatic, now I love autos so I don't know why I get hung up about it - suppose that the early cars weren't as nice as modern autos.

If you were to buy something and have it restored - let's face it most of us don't have the space or the skills - you could very easily exceed this price and still can't be assured of the final price.

For me there are some great plus points, the colour is perfect, the interior about the best I have seen.

I am sure that non GTI models are always going to be less in demand and therefore not appreciate in price as quickly, but face it, if this wa a GTI it would be double the price.

if you want it just to keep for less than say 5 yrs then a bit risky getting money back finding someone who wants one as much as you, if it's a long term keeper then price is a no brainier - well worth getting the best available.

Interestingly price of the more standard models might take off even more as the Performance models get out of reach, look at what has happened in U.K.  to 1.3 Mk2 Escorts now the Mexico's and RS2000 are silly money.

Hi Brian I'm glad you've seen it but as for the spec.
The European spec differs greatly in your market and others.
There are some major differences even between what was supplied to the UK market and the European.

Now I'm in no way an expert on what was sold on 77 cars in Europe but nothing I've seen I've gone oh no that's wrong.

Don't forget they thought first for the biggest market first and then listened to franchises like VW UK who dicided some of the specs themselves upto a point!  ;)

Golf GLS 5dr 1977 automatic in L62A Bali Green for sale.

Morning Mike, hope you’re good matey..

The Golf is almost out of the factory, very fine detail right to the stickers.. I’m with Richard on the auto thing, that really is the only thing for me.. personal perhaps. An investment for sure, no work to do, just simple general maintenance as usual & enjoying it. If you’re going to use it for weddings etc then a return is definite payback & as I said above, an investment. Value only going to go 1 way..

Xx I reckon you already know what you want to do x and you should just go for it, if you have a goal and a purpose then just do it Mike.

I don't know much about the car or it's potential, I think it looks great. I'm just a bit sad about the cabrio! 😂
We can't take all this stuff with us when we go so you might as well enjoy it. Plus you're completely right about early retirement, you need to keep busy and motivated

Richard I pretty much agree with you all your points having owned several early automatics like a Saab 99 and what a nightmare that was so much so I converted it to a manual!

But let's assume for one minute because I don't have any proof to the contrary.
That the engine and box have been treated the same way as the car and replaced rebuild then with the few miles I will do it is not an issue it's a plus point because there are far less automatics around now than manuals. ;)

For me personally it's a catastrophic move when I step out of my Mk6 DSG, 7 speed Tiptronic gearbox and put that in gear! :)

I've just gone back to the stone age!

Thanks Dean as an investment my plan would be to sell it in its 49th/50th year to either make a profit or take a hit although with my experience the latter is very unlikely. Look at what happened into the lead upto its 40th Birthday?

There was a big hike so just imagine its 50th!

Right then my battery is getting low but more importantly I've got to drive back home to watch the Liverpool Derby in just over half an hour. So please keep your comments coming and I'll catch up with each and every one of you later today or tomorrow as we have to go to a 50th birthday party later today! ;)

I like the car, but as I know you will, buy with your head and not your heart. Offer them €8k and see if they cry.

Might want a quick sale…

As far as the business goes, I'd do some research. Is green considered lucky or unlucky there? If it's for weddings, then retail is detail and these things will matter.

I'd also ask some wedding planners and photographers what they think and also take the opportunity to build a potential network that way.

Sorry to hear about your health issues. Hope things work out for you big guy.

The 010 Auto if rebuilt is a deal, they don't get as good as mileage as the 4 or 5spds, but they have been know to go over 400KMile without repair.  No shifting is a plus for me as I have shifting issues when stopped on hills and the ASSJACK pulls up too close behind me….

I personally love the 2 Autos that I have now.

I got retired early after my body took too many high impacts. I had been looking for a Mk1 cabrio auto for 3.5yrs and seen sooo many misdiscribed dogs up and down this GB. I found one that didn't smell like a dead badger was under the back seat or have upholstery like a £10 hookers bed sheets. It had good history but was too expensive. I bought it (with some, but not enough haggling). Three people I knew had died in the previous fortnight, I wasn't going to wait another 3.5 years I might not have…. .
