Hi guys, just a quick question, been having a few issue with my mk1 golf convertible 1.5 carb, car drives fine and then judders to the point of cutting out!! Then it's ok again, some days don't do it, and struggles a bit to start if you haven't started it for a few days? Thanks in advance

Sounds like it might be getting some dirt into the main filter in the tank.

It clogs up the filter but then when it shuts down it clears itself.

Or a HT lead is breaking down possibly.

Has it had any new leads recently? I'd start with plugs, leads and check the dizzy for cracks and build up of deposits on the contacts.

Then give the carb a good clean and check the condition of the air filter.

Might be something simple………………….  O_o

Is the problem sorted now? What was the fault in the end?

No still playing up.. changed the fuel filter 2 as was dirty. Got in to the tank to see/remove any dirt/metal but still playing up. Got plugs and leads coming tomorrow!! If not guess it's the carb!!

Have you got the original distributor or is it a replacement electronic ignition type one? If the old type the capacitor could be faulty. They had a habit of being temperamental with age.

No it was replaced about a year ago.. but that's my next thing to change, if the leads and plugs don't work.. one minute it runs fine the next it starts spluttering and then a misfire, car cuts out then it's ok for a bit and so on.. frustrating..

If the problem comes on all of a sudden it's more than likely ignition related, if it comes on slower I.e. A bit of a splutter first it's probably fuel. Hope that helps. Be interested to know when it's sorted.
