Potential car purchase

Hi everyone,

Checking online it's got no tax or MOT, tax ran out November 1st 2019 and the MOT October 2020.

Strange that the DVLA says the last log book was issued 5th April 2017 but the seller says he bought it a year ago…

If you are interested I would go and see it at the owners house and check the log book and car are at the same house you are..
If you look at the eBay profile they have sold 4 cars in the last year so maybe a home car dealer?

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

What surprised me was the mileage discrepancies and the fail and advisories which I guess your always going to have?

What’s your budget?  If your budget is 5 k you will struggle to find a tin top without needing some level of work etc. A cabby comes in a little cheaper.

If your budget is 10 to 15 k then I would look on this forum and other similar ones to buy if someone who has loved their car.

eBay is buyer beware, if you are comfortable in what you are looking at then eBay is fine. If you don’t know too much about cars and buying with heart over head I don’t think eBay is ideal for that.

Thanks Paul, that really helps. I've spotted another on here that was on eBay but disappeared. I'll register for this site.

I don't have a budget ie. I'll get one if I find the right car. Lockdown is doing my head in and all my other toys either don't need work or aren't old enough! All the diy is done and holidays are out of the question so I'm thinking a doer upper could be on the cards but there are some cracking cars that are worth the extra as it would cost more to do the work yourself!

Oh yes, I did not notice the mileage jump from 194,000 to 705,000 in 2010….

Common advisory play in rear wheel bearing as they are only just nipped up and I get the same advisory most years.

Why not employ the services of an engineer assessor to checkout and report on a possible car?

Unless you are qualified and/or experienced in car restoration….

I guess it could get expensive, so you need to be definitely sure you want to buy it before you commit to an inspection, which would be a professional opinion, and to confirm it is what you are led to believe it is, if that makes sense…

If I'm honest I don't think I'm spending enough and I don't expect it to be perfect. I like a challenge!

Buy a GTi cabriolet as they are cheaper and don't seem to dissolve to rust in the wet like tin tops, come the summer roof down what could be better    My daily GTi cabriolet lives outside and at 305,000 miles it’s still unrestored and never been welded…

That's the way to do it !

maltrunning, sounds like you're about to fall into the same trap as I did - buy a project, spend twice as much  as buying a nice car, and spend a lot of your life covered in rust, grease and grime under a car LoL 😝

I know your right but until I've done it, it's a rusty tin top!

Trouble is it wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't done it before!

Hi everyone,

ebay seems to be the place to search for a mk1 gti unless anyone can advise different? Trouble is the cars are always miles away and sometimes I feel if the car advert leads you to have to ask a question that isn’t in the description then either it’s not genuine or you don’t want to know the answer?

take this example it looks lovely

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vw-golf-gti-mk1-Lhasa-green-/313525440880?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286

it did seem to disappear from my favourites only to re appear today but that may be me.

im not sure what to think but at least it’s not a Hotmail address only contact which appear to be rife on eBay.

This went for £9k. I messaged the seller twice asking to view but got not reply despite the add saying viewing welcome. Makes me wonder how genuine the adds are.

Keep searching I guess.

If they did not reply to you asking to see the car then you've done the right thing, something will turn up or perhaps that car will reappear on eBay again.

The example you put up looked great from afar but there's a heck of a lot that's not stock and would add pretty large sums to put right. The interior isn't GTI, it's been converted to single wiper which is bloody costly and a pain to correct, the bumpers aren't correct, steering wheel and gear knob are wrong, vinyls missing, the wheels aren't correct and also look as though they're BBS copies, the engine has been messed with, arch spats aren't present etc. If it were me I'd have avoided this one too as the resale market is always more limited for these types of mods - if it's also just been blown over with paint for sale there may very likely be some real nasty bits hidden underneath. Maybe a little hash but some of the rubbish I've seen is unbelievable!
