Front Doors Window Chrome Trim

Hi everyone, I've got myself into a pickle. I am in the middle of restoring my mk1 golf 78. I decided to give the front chrome trim that goes around the windows a going over with a mirror polishing kit. But have only come to learn that they are coated with somthing and once you remove the coat the ally is very thin and will leave me with a bodgy job. Luckly I've only done a corner and not the whole strip.

Can someone point me in the correct direction of have these ally window trims restored? Are there any reproductions out there? What are they coated with can I get them recoated?

a very long way round would be door card off, window our, seals off, take trim off, get them chromed and then put back togethger ??

They are off the car, may take to chromers and ask. But spoke to a polishing company who said that they are to thin in metal for them to start mirror polishing them and wouldnt do them for me.
