Mk2 GTI (EV)1.8 twin carb setup advice

Post

Hey,

After some advice on carb selection for my engine conversion. It's a mk2 1.8 8v standard block. It is currently running twin dellorto 40s on short inlet (previously 2048cc bored to 82.51mm)

Has anyone ran this engine and if so what carb setup and how well did it run?

Thanks in advance.

40 dellortos with 34mm chokes work well up to around 150-155hp with the right supporting spec. The important factors are a decent throttle linkage, the right fuel pressure (regulated @ 3psi), and the carbs correctly jetted, balanced and set up,  they will then run very well.

Get any of the above wrong…bad fuel delivery, sloppy worn linkage, out of balance, wrong float heights, jetting etc and they won't give their best.

The inlet manifold also needs to be port matched to the head and the ports opened to suit the head spec. Old used manifolds normally have tiny ports which kill any power potential from twin carbs…the new ones are much better but still need a little work to give the best from them.

That capacity is an odd one too. Std 2ltr bore is 82.5 and std stroke is 92.8…so it's either got a bigger bore or a diesel 95.5mm crank to make the bigger capacity…all a bit tight in an 1800 block but it goes….or did you mean the carbs were previously on a 2048 engine?
