locating starter-motor wiring?

Right I've connected up the relay, well its been in the car most of the week but I've not tested it unil last night :S

Anyway I stripped the insulation off the ground and the pos to battery, and just touched the wire on the pos of the battery and the engine tried to turn over!! I might add I had the keys in my 'pocket' so somethings gotta be up here, or is it that I should have connected the ground first and then the pos..

*note to self(I should always connect the ground first in future)

Does the ground connection somehow keep a gate from being open or closed(not sure of the position in the relay),
Gotta say even the first few turns of the starter sounded better then using the ignition! I actually thought it was going to start from cold and with the choke not being used on the third turn! but I only had it held there for two trugs!

On the VWVortex page it lists a 5 wire config, but this version is a 4.. Heres the image below:

I'm minus the wire labled 'Honking lead to starter'

Anyway if anyone knows whats going on, let me know.. its bloody cold outside, but I'm gonna nip out in a while and give this wiring config another go but this time I'll connet the earth or -(minus) to the battery first and then the pos side :D

Kind regards,
Didge

I'm so flipping lonely, it's killing me lol at least I can laugh about it!!

Think I've figured out why it's not been working as stated, I'll test again after I've sorted out the door central locking system over the next few days :D

It's not my wiring fault or anyone's diagram, it's the engine bays funny wiring system :D

Kind regards,
Didge

Heya guys,

Right i've installed a new starter motor, I've got the red/black wire coming from the ignition to post 50 turning the key turning does nothing. I've checked the relay via replacing it with another one and still nothing I've moved the red/black wire from ignition to post 50 to the other post and get a 'whine' noise coming from the starter.

I'm trying to find a wiring diagram for this shift interlock mech, I've tried lifting up the gearshift and centre console and all the wiring seems fine, pulled it out, give it a shwizz and still nada.. I'm going to have to take the car to a garage I think!

Could anyone let me know something just to clear this up, on the starter I have only two leads.. one being the red/black wire coming from the ignition and going to solenoid on the starter and the other wire is a large black one coming from the battery to the startermotor.. should their be no earth? Is this earth current carried through the engine and then into the battery?

Just I'm a bit unsure here as their are three posts on the new starter:
one: the large black going from battery to starter.
two: the one listed post 50
three: I did not take note of this but could be 50a or something?

If anyone asbout to offer help as it's dark that would be kind.. I don't mind going at this all night tbh :)

Kind regards,
didge

yeah starter earths via the gearbox then back to the battery so check thats all nice and clean. the 2nd spade terminal is pin 15a, which is live when cranking. this is for k-jet injection and points ignition cars :)

i dont have a wiring diagram for your car specifically, but if you check my sig for jetta89.pdf page 8 this shows the pre-90 mk2 golf wiring which should be similar to a mk1 golf with late blade fusebox the early ceramic fusebox will be different pins on the fusebox but should be possible to figure it out when comparing to g1wiring.pdf
