Hydraulic or solid lifters?

Post

As the title says, I need to know if i have hydraulic or solid lifters. What am I looking for (I mean, I'd like to avoid taking the cam out if I can tell with it in!) Its a Mk2 injection head with the injectors blocked so possibly hydraulic?

Should be solid.

I think hydraulic tappets have a plastic cover under the cam cover, you can see it if you take the oil filler cap off, and solid tappets don't have a cover, you can see the cam shaft, PB engine should be hydraulic but not 100% sure, I think the change over year was 1984/1985.

The year they went from solid to hydraulic? Well both of my engines have the plastic splash cover on so sounds like hydraulic!

thats part number on the cylinder head, not the engine code. the engine code is on the engine block, just above the oil filter housing.

MK3 golf GTI heads have all 5 cam caps even with hydraulic lifters, I guess same is also possible for SA engine codes. we dont have so much experience with those over here.

is your front coolant flange aluminium? if so and you can get more you might find a market selling them to europe… Briano would be especially interested I expect :P

Naw, I replaced all of my coolant flanges on my Digifart with Metal ones.  I got rid of the plastic ones as soon as I realized that the 16V CTS sensor was the same as the Digi-blue one.  So I swapped all of them…. Funny thing is that since I have done that I haven't had a broken or distorted or one that leaked…. :) .

The hardest one to find was the t-stat cover and that was bought for 25 bucks each and I ordered 3…

one on left from a 81 diesel in the yard.

Replaced this:

with

I used the 16V CTS sensor, and the Black Oil Temp sensor for my Coolant Gauge…Worked great…. best thing is no leaking at all….

And the Metal -t-stat cover I got a GAP….  So my flanges are all better now.  :)

I only have 2 -plastic parts on my Car in the cooling system now… The Radiator Expansion jug, and the heater Matrix.  :)

if nothing else would be interesting to see a metal flange exists that takes the later type sensors, but its probably just a trick of the photo :)

luckily I had a metal t-stat flange included on one of the scrap blocks that came with my cabrio, I made sure to keep that for my mk2. unfortunately for me no OEM flange exist for ABF engines so I have to make do with genuine VW ones. To be fair genuine ones last really well, touch wood its been almost 10 years now

Rub…..You never mention how well parts work for as how long they have been installed because they are sure to break on you now.  :)
