Oil pressure help! 1.6 with gti head

Post

Recent acquired a mk1 convertible. 1.6 auto. With a Webber carb. First drive, the cam seized due to an oil blockage. Wrote off the cylinder head. Fitted a gti head. Done an oil plus filter change. And removed the circuit board that controlled the oil pressure buzzer as it was faulty.

Fitted a VDO gauge. And fired up the car to see it shoot to the top of the gauge on start up. Past 80psi. And sit on the top stopper. And not move. Warmed the car up for a good ten mins on choke. And not a flinch. However. When switching the engine off. It went back down to the bottom stop. Which makes me think there's a wiring issue rather than an oil issue! Any help much appreciated!

Welcome along.

Could be the wrong sender unit for the oil pressure gauge maybe?

Many thanks. I bought a kit from VW Heritage. And this included the sender unit. It says it fits all golf cabrio's but doesn't go into specific engines

Might get in touch with them and check it is the correct one!

If you look at the "Can" sender on the side of the head, if you reverse the leads that is the indication you get.

If you are coming off a non originally equipped unit, then you may have to run an additional wire to the gauge in the lower or center cluster set.   oilpressureswitch.png

As one wire is for the oil pressure gauge, and the other for the Low Pressure warning system that you removed.
The White sender is on the oil filter flange and is for low pressure when rpm is high and should flash the light and buzz the buzzer which you removed as well.  The Low pressure switch which was a single pin connector on the side of the head that you probably swapped out for the can only lights the light on low rpm at idle.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Edit: reversed the wires on the can and it worked perfectly. No other changes needed
